I am a little confused on this issue. Are we talkign about a laptop or a PC?

If we are talking about a PC I would first replace the EIDE cable from the HD to the Mother board with a know good one. Second I would place the Hd in a second computer (if you have one) and see if the same error occurs. If it still occurs that narrowed it down to a hard drive. If error still occurs either purchase some advanced utilities (Nutz and boltz or Systematic System works[i think is the name of it])

If this is a laptop download some hardware diagnostic disks from Compaq and see if you recieve any flags. If you live near a good computer shop I would also rocommend they run a test on your hard drive out side the laptop

Holy run on sentence, EQUITZ! Welcome to the forum.

Russ- the compaq laptops were fameous for having problems with anything but their specific video driver. The vid card maker's driver usually don't cut it in a compaq lap top.

My advise is to download the specific driver from Compaq's web page on another computer and copy it to a CD. Then boot to safe mode on the laptop, remove your vid adaptor in device manager, and try a full boot. It should prompt you to add the driver- point it to the CD.
