System information startup list is being corrupted

I have a problem which I have been unable to find an answer for. I suspect it to be a virus although not a vicious one. My operating system is Windows XP.

I like to use system information, software environment, startup programs to determine what is being loaded at startup as it allows me to determine where the item being started at boot up is being commanded. I then can remove those items that I do not feel are necessary and thus save on processor and memory utilization.

When my problem occurs, the startup tabulation contains not only my rightful startup items, but also, the entire contents of “system32”, with each file listed two times, once with a user name of NT AUTHORITY/SYSTEM and again with a user name of .DEFAULT. The entire list is about 4100 entries long and takes a number of seconds to load. The listing is in alphabetical order with numbers first, capitalized items second and lower case items last.

In the system information, software environment drop down list just above startup programs is program groups. This listing is also affected when the problem occurs. The entire contents of the folders under directory C: are fully expanded and listed.

When the problem occurs, system restore is no longer effective. It will go through its paces including shutdown and reboot but will always report that it could not restore the requested configuration.

This problem occurs on two computers in my home. They are networked together and they also both receive email from common computers.

I have a program that will copy the Registry and allow me to restore to a prior configuration. I use this to recover from the problem since Windows Restore will not function properly when the problem occurs.

A virus scan using Norton Anti-virus fails to find anything. Spybot has not found anything to cure the problem either.

I have reloaded the operating system which eliminates the problem for a short time but in a matter of a day or two the problem reoccurs.

My hard drive is partitioned in to two drives with the first one being used for the operating system and for installed programs. The second partition is used for storage of programs or drivers downloaded from the internet and for “my documents”, “address book”, and “emails”. I have dumped the contents of the first drive, reformatted it and reloaded the operating system and installed programs. In just a matter of time the problem reoccurs.

Since this problem does not appear to be a vicious one and does not affect any operations and is also only evident in System Information, it is unlikely that the anti-virus people have even heard about it or would even be concerned about it. It does however, make the startup programs listing almost unusable which becomes quite an inconvenience.

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Can anyone help me with a solution?

Have you tried checking out msconfig in "run" and getting rid of unneeded startup items?
I should have mentioned in my thread that the additional items noted in the system information startup listing are not listed in the msconfig startup list and they do not seem to affect system operation. The additional items only make the system information startup list un-usable because the list becomes so long, approximately 4100 items.

I have the registry copied and can restore it to make the problem not evident again but in only a matter of time the problem will reoccur. I have been unable to determine what makes it reoccur. I would really like to determine what is causing the problem.

I know your last message was some time ago and you have probably cured the problem by now but if not this might help.

I recently found the same problem (at least as far as System Information is concerned) .

As I had recently installed some new software - AVG Anti-Spyware from Grisoft- I first uninstalled it which did not clear the problem. I then resorted to System Restore from a few days before which worked and cleared the problem. (System Restore seemed unaffected on my machine).

To check if it really was this software that caused it, I reinstalled it. Immediately the problem was back and was still there after the uninstall, System Restore then fixed it again.

This is pretty widely used software so is probably a compatibility problem with other software.

I have a computer that also has the sys info startup list full of redundant files. NT Authority/System and Default are the users for every file in the list. I had alot of problems with the system taking as much as 8 minutes to boot to the login screen. Now that I have that solved I still get these errors 1) Object name already exists 2) Registry Data not found.
I believe these errors are linked somehow to the system information problem you described here.
If anyone can verify this I sure would like to know.

I am having the same problem that sys info bugged reported a year ago.
The Startup Program listing is full of the contents of the System32 folder as is the Program Groups listing.

I have never used AVG nor Norton AV which I notice others have thought
responsible for this problem.

I would be grateful if anyone can remember how they solved this one.

Had the same problem but I've managed to find a fix.

I found that the cause of the problem is that Msinfo32 (SysInfo) accesses the following registry entry

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Startup

This entry on my PC wasn't set and for some Micro$oft strange reason this results in all the \Windows\System32 directory appearing in Startup Programs on MsInfo but not in MsConfig.

Strangely enough I cant remember this being the case in the past and since I've just deleted a trojan it makes me wonder. But then again I also did a few Windows updates.

Anyway the fix follows.

1. Create a Startup folder in the settings folder for LocalService generally C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Startup

2. Open your Registry Editor and change the following entry to the directory you just created.

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Startup

That's it!

I've also noticed that if you have the above problem you also probably find that the "Program Groups" option of SysInfo takes forever to display and seems to lists about every file on your system.

In this case I found that the cause of the problem is that Msinfo32 (SysInfo) accesses the following registry entry which is blank.

1. Create a \Start Menu\Programs folder in the settings folder for LocalService generally C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Start Menu\Programs

2. Open your Registry Editor and change the following entry to the directory you just created.

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Programs

The "Program Groups" SysInfo option should now only list programs in the "Start Menu" folders of all users and take a second or two to display

Firstly disregard the last message from Michael Drivas which regards removing viruses. This problem has nothing to do with viruses unless you count Microsoft Windows and Dell bloatware as being virus/spyware (though not far from the truth especially in this case :eek:).

For some time my solution worked well but after sometime the problem magically reappeared, and thereafter after every reboot, but only after a delay of about 3-5 minutes after logon.

Technical description (Jump if you just want the fix)
-------------------------------------------------

After monitoring the registry I found the culprit in my case (but read on as there are many possibilities) was a service called sprtsvc.exe which is Dell's SupportCenter's service.

This software is actually supplied by SupportSoft and basically takes a snapshot of your system's hardware/software settings and sends it off to SupportSoft who keep it for assess by Dell to help with Help Desk queries. It also runs some basic fixup scripts and can recommend updates. If your Dell has this there should be a blue spanner icon in your systray. If your paranoid about outside access to your computer simply uninstall "Dell Support Center" from Control Panels "Add or Remove Programs" window but note you will loose a facility to keep your computer in good working order !

On further investigation I found that the problem was actually caused by a Microsoft bug and even more compounded by another Microsoft bug. Basically SupportSoft use an XML script to query the location of the StartMenu which uses the WshShell.SpecialFolders command. This in turn uses the MS SHGetSpecialFolderLocation command. The problem
with this command is that it resets the keys in the "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders" registry entry to the default entries as provided by the entries in the "HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders" registry entry or even worse deletes them altogether if the default directories don't exist! Furthermore the %USERPROFILE% registry variable evaluates to either LocalService or NetworkService depending on what time the service is started (a definite bug).

So whats this all mean? Effectively it means that other than disabling any program that uses SHGetSpecialFolderLocation (not many but hard to identify) we have to provide matching startup directories in both the LocalService and NetworkService user directories as well as using the default "\Start Menu\Programs\Startup" setup. Although the registry entries will eventually be overwritten with whatever user directory MS chooses depending on the time, it means that MsInfo32 will stop thinking every thing in \system32 is a startup program straight away!

The Fix (for Windows XP. Vista status unknown)
---------------------------------------------

1) Create the following directories:

C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

C:\Documents and Settings\NetworkService\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

2. Open your Registry Editor and change the following entries to the values given:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Startup => C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders\Programs => C:\Documents and Settings\LocalService\Start Menu\Programs

That's it!

I ran into this problem on two diffent computers. Unfortunately, I reinstalled xp and all software on one computer before i found your fix. My problems started after the SP3 update (done while AVG antivirus was running). :4-thatsba After the reinstall, I did the SP3 update before installing AVG and the problem has not returned. Don't know if this has anything to do with the problem or not. Just an observation.
Many thanks Professor, I thought that I had fixed my problem by running "SFC /Scannow" but it reappeared. Your registry edits seem to have done the trick, though what caused it I'm unsure as I am not using Dell.

Update! Please ignore my comment about SP3 and AVG. Don't want to mislead anyone. Just discovered this same problem on a third PC in my home network and it has not been updated to SP3. Also, I did not reinstall all software on the PC mentioned above (forgot to install Google Earth).

Been working with computers many years and have never run into this problem. I would really like to know where this is coming from all of a sudden. Two other computers on my network still do not have this problem. The only common denominator I could find with the three PC's that have/had this problem is the latest version of Google Earth had been installed. So, I went back to the one PC where I reinstalled everything and added the latest version of Google Earth with AVG antivirus still active. Guess what? The problem reappeared immediately. So, looks like at least in my case the latest version of Google Earth (basic version 4.3.7284.3916-beta) is the culprit.

My guess is that one of these programs was the culprit. Both are very intrusive. Will now try your cleanup solution. Thanks.

Answer: This problem can occur if the hidden desktop.ini file in the special folder is corrupt or missing. Here are the steps to fix this problem:

The fix for desktop.ini can be downloaded from the site and it has instructions for it's use.

Before opening newly installed software, I usually run the desktop.ini fix first, reboot, then run the MSInfo32 fix, reboot. Then I run MSInfo32 to confirm the sections for Environment Variables, Program Groups and Startup Programs only have entries for the current user.

Not quite sure why some programs cause the MSInfo32 corruption, but these two simple fixes have always worked for me---running XP Professional SP2 with IE6.
