Have you tried checking out msconfig in "run" and getting rid of unneeded startup items?
Update! Please ignore my comment about SP3 and AVG. Don't want to mislead anyone. Just discovered this same problem on a third PC in my home network and it has not been updated to SP3. Also, I did not reinstall all software on the PC mentioned above (forgot to install Google Earth).Thank You Professor! Fixed my problem wihtout a hitch.
I ran into this problem on two different computers. Unfortunately, I reinstalled xp and all software on one computer before i found your fix. My problems started after the SP3 update (done while AVG antivirus was running). :4-thatsba After the reinstall, I did the SP3 update before installing AVG and the problem has not returned. Don't know if this has anything to do with the problem or not. Just an observation.
Thank you professor. This problem has been bugging me for months on one of my PCs. Just yesterday I encountered it again. I was building a new PC for photo image processing and installed Nero 7 essentials and then Easy Media Creator 6 (trying to build a slipstream XP Pro install disk with SP3). I checked System Info/software environment/Startup Programs and found thousands of entries i.e. contents of Windows System32.
My guess is that one of these programs was the culprit. Both are very intrusive. Will now try your cleanup solution. Thanks.
