I'm working on a client's computer and the system.exe process is using 99 to 100 percent of the CPU. When viewed in the new Process Explorer I see that the thread usbport.sys is the one taking all of the CPU usage.

Here is what I have tried so far...

- I have replaced the hard drive

- I have re-installed Windows.

- I have tried disabling the USB host controller and the root hubs.
(It will not allow me to disable. It just hangs with an hour glass)

- I can suspend the usbport.sys thread from process explorer, which finally gives the CPU usage back to the system idle.
(this would have to be done each time I startup)

- I have unplugged the USB headers from the motherboard.
(No help)

- I have deleted the usbport.sys file and had it replaced with a restart.
(No help)

- I have reset the BIOS on the motherboard
(No help)

- I have run several spyware and anti-virus programs.

The only logical thing would be to replace the motherboard, cpu, or heatsink... But the thing that gets me is that when I suspend the usbport.sys thread, the system frees up. Normally I would say hardware, but in this case I think I just have to disable something. I wouldn't mind not using the USB ports on my motherboard, as long as I would be able to use a USB-PCI card.

Thanks in advance.

I did fix this problem by replacing the system board. It was a hardware issue all along. I spent a very long time on this customer's comp. Don't waste time, just replace the MB. Good luck.
