swap old primary HD for new, but still read old HD?

I want to get a new hard drive to replace my current bootable primary drive. (since for the past several months, it has been making clicking sounds) The current drive is formatted with windows 98SE installed.

The new primary boot hard drive will likely have a new format with windows XP installed on it. Can I still set my old hard drive up as slave and read my old data-files off it in the new windows install as the "D:\" drive?

I would imagine this can be done, but i just want to confirm it.

TIA.

By default, your hard drive when put on the slave setting will go to the drive letter D. Thus, your new hard drive when set up with windows XP, will be C and will be the drive the boots up. You will be able to get everything you want on your older hard drive as long as it still works with the clicking sound (not good).
