svchost is a service host...meaning its hosting services such as audio , dhcp lanmanager, etc....Depending on how many services it has to run, it might be overloading and slowing down your PC...
If this is a win2k machine, from CD-ROM you can do tlist.exe...It will show you details of what svchost is running...or "hosting"...
