When i go online i can't see any images on the web pages and i'm told there's an error: svchost.exe (0000096) <nosymbols> (0052F863). Have run a virus scan with no joy. Any ideas?

There are a lot of synchost problems going around right now. A large percentage to them are due to the Blaster family of worms.

Go to SARC and download the blaster removal tool. Follow the directions, and then see how you are after reboot.

Let us know how things came out, please.

In W2k, it's going to be hard to stay "patched up" if you aren't using SP3 or 4. However, installing service packs has it's own set of perils. If you're OK after the blaster tool, you might want to ask some questions about SPs.

Even if you're current on patches, without a firewall the probes from the MSBLASTER series of worms can crash your machine with a SVCHOST error. Obtain and install a firewall, try www.zonelabs.com for a free one that will do the trick.

Agree wholeheartly! First line of defense is a good firewall (I run ZA Free).

The second is a good antivirus program, spyware blockers and deleters and reasonable computer practices.

Third is software that is as resistant as possible to the invaders. That's where the patches, service packs, etc, come in!

To ignore any one of these three levels is to ask for trouble!
