when my pc starts up and I open a few windows (Internet Explorer, Messenger, Windows Explorer) they take ages to respond and sometimes the whole pc freezes and I have to reset the computer. Also, after my stepson logs into his account, after about 60 seconds the pc shuts down and restarts.
I have tried looking up what this could be and have been pointed towards the file SVCHOST.EXE. I have checked this file out on the task manager and resource monitor and it seems to be using a lot of resources even when nothing much is happening; I am aware this is an important Windows file, but have heard that there can be malicious copies of it and need to know if there is anything I can do about it.

Well on Vista the svchost.exe runs constantly and acts as a bridge between the system and un-automated DLL files which cannot run themselves, hence the need for that program,

However it could be down to something else that is run by svchost,

Try

1. Select 'Start' and type 'Event Viewer', press enter

2. Once loaded, On the left hand side select 'Windows Log' and then 'Applications' then 'System'

3. Check both of these reports for the sign of anything that occurred roughly when these issues began and they should point to the actual source

4. You can then select 'Actions' from the top menu and 'Save Event' when you feel you found a suspicious event

Let us know if you find anything,

Might be an idea to try and reboot in 'Selective Mode' and reactivate the services one by one to see if you can narrow down a faulty program

1. Select 'Start' and type 'MSConfig', Then press enter

2. In the 'General' tab select 'Diagnostic Startup'

3. Select 'Apply' and 'Exit With Restart'

Thanks for the quick reply, I have 2 system errors saying the aswMon service failed due to an incorrect function, and from volmgr, crash dump initialization failed. Are these anything to do with svchost.exe?

Yeah its no problem,

The aswMon is a monitoring tool used by avast, Hopefully you have it installed lol, This normally only shows up when its scanning online or any transmissions to and from your system, Try downloading a new version of avast or running the updates to remove that error for the time being.

For the second error there has been reports of people having issues while debugging where the system cannot write the files to the correct folders

Try

1. Select 'Start' and type 'System'

2. Select the bottom option which should say 'System'

3. On the left hand side select 'Advanced System Settings'

4. Under the heading 'Startup & Recovery' select 'Settings'

5. Now half way down this new pop up window make sure that you have the option checked for 'Write an event to system log'

6. Select Ok and OK again then reboot your PC
