Hi there!

I believe I have the virtumonde virus.

Symptoms include:

Internet Explorer and/or Mozilla Firefox to crash to desktop on a very frequent basis, either after a long period of browsing or simultaneous crashes at once.

Blue Screen of Death (although I may have a hardware fault rather than a trojan).

Many executable files crash and close - messages such as "avgrsx.exe has encountered a problem"

I have googled my issues and read many forums that are far more technologically advanced than I am and could really use simple instructions for a quick removal. My last resort is to take my desktop box to the nearest computer support place, but I simply cannot afford them!

Thanks in advance.

Here is my log:

I have forgotten to mention that I did recieve the typical symptoms of this virus such as the mimicking of Windows Security Centre etc, but those have disappeared since reinstalling windows.

Thanks again.

Hello GrosBisous,

You mentioned you reinstalled Windows. Did you reformat first, or did you do a Repair install?

Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware to your desktop.

  • Double-click mbam-setup.exe and follow the prompts to install the program.
  • At the end, be sure a checkmark is placed next to the following:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
  • Then click Finish.
  • If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  • Once the program has loaded, select Perform Quick scan, then click Scan.
  • When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  • Be sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When completed, a log will open in Notepad. Save it to your desktop.
Note: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware may require a reboot to complete removals. After a reboot, if required, post that saved log in your next reply.

I did not reinstall Windows myself, but I believe it was a repair install as I did not have to re-download any programmes or files or anything.

Thank you. I'm not seeing any malware in the logs. Let's see if an online scan reveals anything. It can take several hours, so please be patient and allow it to run it's full course:

Establish an internet connection & perform an online scan with Firefox or Internet Explorer at Kaspersky Online Scanner

**Note**

To optimize scanning time and produce a more sensible report for review:
  • Close any open programs
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan.
Click Accept, when prompted to download and install the program files and database of malware definitions.
  • Click Run at the Security prompt.
  • The program will then begin downloading and installing and will also update the database.
  • Please be patient as this can take several minutes.
  • Once the update is complete, click on My Computer under the green Scan bar to the left to start the scan.
  • Once the scan is complete, it will display if your system has been infected. It does not provide an option to clean/disinfect. We only require a report from it.
  • Do NOT be alarmed by what you see in the report. Many of the finds have likely been quarantined.
  • Click View scan report at the bottom.
  • Click the Save Report As... button.
  • Click the Save as Text button to save the file to your desktop so that you may post it in your next reply.

I have disabled my anti-virus software and that online scanner still won't allow me to scan, my java keeps crashing too which I think that website needs to work?

Is it worth me asking on a different forum for help if you do not think it's a virus?

Thank you very much. :)

Not yet - let's try a different scanner. Go here to run an online scannner from ESET.
  • Note: You will need to use Internet explorer for this scan
  • Turn off the real time scanner of any existing antivirus program while performing the online scan
  • Tick the box next to YES, I accept the Terms of Use.
  • Click Start
  • When asked, allow the activex control to install
  • Click Start
  • Make sure that the option Remove found threats is unticked, and the option Scan unwanted applications is checked
  • Click Scan
  • Wait for the scan to finish
  • Use notepad to open the logfile located at C:\Program Files\Eset\Eset Online Scanner\log.txt
  • Copy and paste that log as a reply to this topic.

Hello GrosBisous,

Since it's been so long, what symptoms remain?

Hi there,

the symptoms are still the same and so I'm guessing I have a different problem that isn't a virus.

Thank you very much for your help - at least we have found out that I probably do not have a virus!

You're welcome.

My last resort is to take my desktop box to the nearest computer support place, but I simply cannot afford them!
Before you take it in for repair, why don't you talk to the folks in our Windows XP Support section can help you troubleshoot this?

When you begin a post there, mention this to them (from your Attach.txt)
