My Computer was running painfully slow so I performed the 5 step process you recommend. My computer is running faster but I am still a bit paranoid about being hacked. I was messing around with a program called FileZila as I wanted to create a server for a friend to transfer files to via the internet. Quite stupidly I closed Windows Firewall while I was doing this and I think someone hacked into my computer. Strange file folders began appearing and they could not be deleted. They have since disappeared. but there are some folders on one of my drives that I don't remeber being there before. Anyway..... I hope is helpfull information for you to help me. Thank you so much!

Here is my HyjackThis Log:

IT IS IMPORTANT THAT YOU DON'T MISS A STEP & PERFORM EVERYTHING IN THE RIGHT ORDER.

----------------------------------------

The fixes we will use are specific to your problems and should only be used for this issue on this machine.

Please only use this topic to reply to. Do not start another thread.

There were two other files for Jotti. Do you have the reports for them?

Regarding this file: msxml4-KB927978-enu.log, please read through this Microsoft Link.

You do have a SmitFraud infection which we are going to clean.

----------------------------------------

SAFE MODE RE-BOOT

Please reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following:
1) Restart your computer
2) After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, press F8.
3) Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu should appear
4) Use the up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode and press Enter.
5) Login with your usual account. Make sure to close any open browsers.

----------------------------------------

SmitFraud - OPTION 2

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press Enter.
Wait for the tool to complete and disk cleanup to finish.
You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry?" answer Yes by typing Y and hit Enter.
The tool will also check if wininet.dll is infected. If a clean version is found, you will be prompted to replace wininet.dll. Answer Yes to the question "Replace infected file?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

The tool will create a log named c:\rapport.txt in the root of your drive, eg: Local Disk C: (C:rapport.txt) or partition where your
operating system is installed. Please post that log along with all others requested in your next reply.

----------------------------------------

SECURE DESKTOP

Next go to Control Panel click Display>Desktop>Customize Desktop>Web> Now, Uncheck Everything and delete if present:

  • "Security Info"
  • "Warning Message"
  • "Security Desktop"
  • "Warning Homepage"
  • "Desktop Uninstall"

Also make sure the 'Lock desktop items' box is unticked. Click OK, and then Click Apply, then OK.

----------------------------------------

SYSTEM RE-BOOT

Reboot into Normal Mode.

----------------------------------------

SmitFraud - OPTION 3

Double-click on SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool.
Select option #3 - Delete Trusted zone by typing 3 and press Enter
Answer Yes to the question "Restore Trusted Zone ?" by typing Y and hit Enter.

Note, if you use SpywareBlaster and/or IE-SPYAD, it will be necessary to re-install the protection both afford.
For SpywareBlaster, run the program and re-protect all items. For IE-SPYAD, run the batch file and reinstall the protection.

----------------------------------------

There are two regedit.exe files, one is a virus and the other operates the Registry Editor on your system.

Please do this:

Go to Start>>>Run. In the Run box, type regedit

A window should pop up titled "Registry Editor" and show the registry entries in the left panel. Let me know if you get this.

Regedit should be in c:\windows. If it's not there, go to c:\windows/system32\dll cache (you may have to unhide files) and copy/paste regedit into C:\windows.

regedit

Regedit was not in the windows directory. I found it where you suggested and copied and pasted it to the windows directory.

I have used regedit in the past, why would it suddenly disappear?

.....and I get a warning:

"Windows File Protection"

Files that are required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the origonal versions of these files.

This is getting out of the area of malware. I would like you to post this problem in the Windows XP Support forum. The folks there will be better able to assist you. Please mention that your system was cleaned in the HJT forum.
