Super Mario Brothers on PC

No idea what the problem is I downloaded Super Mario Brothers (.exe) a week ago and it was working fine ... didn't do anything that I'm aware of but it no longer works. When I run it the screen just goes black... and stays black. So I tried downloading it again... from a different place... and it does the same thing. Once more, and again, same thing. So I am thinking it's not the game but something to do with my computer - any ideas?? Anything I should try?
