You have to tell us more about your setup and what you are trying to do.
You usually do not setup a static IP address, unless it is a network printer or NAS. Is the network a work environment on a Domain, or is this a Peer to Peer network or Home setup? Is your server a Domain Controller?
If a home or peer to peer network, the IP address is assigned by DHCP by the Modem and or the Router.
If setting a static IP address, then the subnet should be the same.

"Does it make sense to have your router and server in the same available IP address?"

Same? No you can't do that. Each ip address in a subnet has to be unique so your router would be at 192.168.1.1 and your server would be at 192.168.1.2 for example.

You do not need to subnet [divide up the existing subnet into smaller subnets] for your situation.
