On Windows 10, I recently installed the driver and utilities for an Epson DS-530 scanner. Ever since, when I'm typing, the window I'm typing in unexpectedly loses focus and my typed characters stop appearing in the window. It has happened several times already typing this text. Sometimes it happens with every character typed.

With the mouse, I often cannot choose an item from a dropdown because the dropdown disappears immediately.

In both cases, is seems like some other window I can't see is getting the focus.

I went into Task Manager and terminated the only Epson entry I found. No change. I went into MSConfig, disabled the only Epson Item found, and rebooted. No change.

Any suggestions before giving up and uninstalling the Epson driver?

Press the Windows key +X and choose Device Manager. Are there any devices with yellow flags? If so, these devices need drivers installed.
Is your mouse and keyboard wireless? If so, have you changed the batteries?
It sounds like a key is stuck on the keyboard. Turn the keyboard upside down and give it a good shake, blow out the keyboard with a can of compressed air.
If all else fails, uninstall the Epson utility software, and restart the computer. Does the problem go away? If not, then it is not the Epson software causing the problem, it's just a coincidence.

Device Manager shows several items with a yellow exclamation mark:

I tried disabling them; no change.

The keyboard and mouse are both USB.

I inverted the keyboard and gently tapped it on the desk to knock detritus out of it. No change.

I'll try uninstalling the driver if no answers after a while.

What is the make and model # of your computer or motherboard?
Go to the manufacturers download drivers site, and type in your make and model # and download the Chipset Driver and reboot. Check the Device Manager again go back to the Drives page and download any other drivers you need from the Device Manager

It's a Dell 5530. I went to the Dell support site, and let their SupportAssist utility find and install drivers etc., and rebooted. I repeated until SupportAssist no longer found anything to install. No change.

Should have been ok then. Sorry just re read and see its a scanner not printer. Is it a new device or an old one? Just wondering if you got a driver confirmed to be compatible with Windows 10 or did you have to settle for a Windows 7 driver. If its definitely a Windows 10 driver, you would probably need to take it up with Epson. I know that's not always easy but also check out their forums to see if anyone else had similar issues.

It seems to have been released in 2016. The Epson website seemed to indicate it was a Windows 10 driver:

Hard to find t-shooting forums on Epson scanners. I googled but did not find this issue. But this issue might be hard to google anyway as different people might use different words to describe it.

Remove the USB cable to the Scanner from the computer end, and restart the computer.
Plug the USB cable from the scanner to the computer end. It should say new hardware found Go to the Device Manager. If there are yellow flags then right click and Uninstall them. Then remove the USB cable from the computer end and restart the computer. If there are no yellow flags in the Device Manager with the cable attached and the scanner on, then there is no driver required, you can install just the software suite.
If you removed the cable, Install the driver and software suite. During the installing the driver, it should ask you to plug in the USB Cable to the computer end, then continue with the install. If the scanner is not listed in the Device Manager under Imaging device, right click ANY device and choose Scan For Hardware Changes and the computer should recognize the scanner if it is turned on and the USB cable is plugged into the Back USB port not the front or thru USB Hub as these might be weaker ports.
