Storing info on a CD

3054 Views 39 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  gcdavis
When I first got my computer I was able to store information, photos etc. on a 650 meg disk. Now when I try to store info on that same disk I get the message " This file is on a network drive with create but no modify privileges. Please ask the administrator of this network to change this condition.", and I am unable to store the info on the disk. I am not hooked up to any network that I know of. Can anyone help me get my computer back to normal? Step by step instructions please, as I don't know much about computers. Thank You.

Hi gcdavis and welcome to TSF, the "Fruit Of The Loom" of support forums.

Need a little help from you info. wise before we start.

1.) The Brand name of your Cd Drive.
2.) The Type of Drive (CdRom, CD W/R,, CD W/R / DVD Compo
Drive, etc....).
3.) The speeds (Example: 4x12x32) of the drive.
4.) The drive's "Driver Letter Assignment". (From [My Computer])

That should allow us to help you to a *swift and easy solution*.

Thank you for answering. I hope this is the info you need to solve my problem.
HITACHI DVD-ROM GD-5000 [CD-ROM drive]
SONY CD-RW CRX100E [CD-ROM drive]
Generic floppy disk drive (3.5")

The letter assignment for my CD burner drawer was "E" now it's "F". The "F" designator appears in " my computer" but not on the "send to" window.

The speed as shown on my packing list for the sony CD-RW CRX100E [CD-ROM drive] is 2x/4x/24x

I hope this helps.

George,

OK let me just make sure I'm making the correct assumptions about your set up.

Primary IDE Type drive Detection Mode
********** ************ *************
Master Hard Drive C: Auto
Slave Hard Drive D: Auto

Secondary IDE Type drive Detection Mode
********** ************ *************
Master CD ROM (DVD)Drive E: Auto
Slave CD W/R Drive F: Auto

You will have to reboot and go into you're Bios Setup to check these settings - don't make any changes to your bios now just write down the info and post it.

P.S. - Sorry George I really should have requested this info. on my first post but this seems to be my second Monday this week.

Now when I try to store info on that same disk I get the message " This file is on a network drive with create but no modify privileges
Is the disk full?

Is this a CDR or a CDRW?
Speedo

According to the properties of my "F" drive the used space is 180MB and the free space is 352MB

The disk is a CD-RW

George
twas,

I'm sorry, but I'm really not very well versed on computers. I have no idea how to accomplish what you asked me to do and I hope that I'm not wasting your time. What I need is step by step instructions.
Thank you.

Go to device manager and click the plus sign next to CD-Rom.

Right click the burner and select properties.

Select settings and see what drive letters are in there.
speedo,

Drive letter assigned, "F"

Reserved drive letters, None (blank squares)

Options checked:

Disconnect
Auto insert
DMA

That error sounds strange....have you tried a new CD and to reboot first? Since you are running win98 you have to be using some form of "packet writing" software to drag and drop on to a CDr or rw. Do you by chance know what software you are using? It might be an internal setting in the software itself that got changed accidentially................
G
Set the reserved drive letters to "F" reboot and see if it works.
JAMMAN,

Thank you for responding. I can store on the disk from word, but can no longer store from things I find on the net or from my scanner. One other strange thing that happened is I can't open the burner drawer unless I do it during restart. If I want to open the burner drawer I restart my computer and open the drawer during the restart. After the restart is completed, I can no longer open the drawer. I can also drag and drop into my "F" drive and the item appears on the disk and stays there till I restart my computer at some other time. After the restart the item is gone from the disk. Spooky huh? I don't know what kind of software I have for this program as it was installed by Dell at the factory, but I do have lots of software that came with my computer. Any light you may be able to shed on this will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

George
SPEEDO,
I put "F" in both blank boxes. Shut down the computer as per instructions from the computer. After the computer was back up I put a photo in my scanner, scaned it, and tried to save it to my "F" drive. I got the same massage mentioned in my first post, "create but no modify privileges etc." I really thought you had something there. is it OK to leave those F's in those boxes now?

George
JAMMAM,

I formatted a new CD and tried saving a photo to it and it worked OK. To check it out , I put the CD that didn't work back in, dragged and dropped some photos to it then restarted my computer to see if they would still be on the CD and they weren't, they were gone just like before. I guess it's just one of those computer mysteries. Anyway thank you so much for the help. I do however still have the problem of not being able to open the drive drawer unless I first select restart and press the open button while in restart. Got any ideas on that one. By the way, Thanks to twas and speedo also, do either of you have any ideas on the drawer problem?

Just for laughs create a shortcut to the CD recorder on the desktop.

Right click the icon and select eject.
Hi George - twas again,

(Before I forget, let me get this down in writing).
I noted on one of your posts your disk spaced added up to 532 MB and you mentioned that you can copy from Word so I'd be willing to bet that your CD W/R software is Adaptect "CD Direct" and it is one very fussy piece of software. (There now if I can just remember where its at I'm set)

I haven't been ignoring you, most of us are here to try help people with a problem so I certainly didn't think you were wasting my time.

As much as I hate to admit this (although) everybody already knows it) Speedo and Jamman both know more about computers than I've forgotten, and believe me that a lot. So when they pickup on a thread I generally back off and let them handle it.

I mean it's not like we get paid on commission.

Anyway since my esteemed colleges ************* HEY wait a minute --- it just dawned on me ---- we don't get paid at all, oh is that Danrak a smooth talker or what.

Where was I, lets try this again, please reboot your PC - get one finger ready to press the [Pause] key, as after the memory check it should detect and list your drives **** as soon as lists the Secondary Slave press [pause] , you have to be really quick.

Write down all the info. on the drives as shown. If it pauses a little early just hit the [SpaceBar] to continue and be ready with that [pause] key.

If it goes to the next screen before pausing just hit the [SpaceBar] to continue and let it finish booting completely, Restart and try again until you get the info. or if my instructions are not clear enough then repost to us.

We'll get this fixed soon now George so hang tuff.

to see if they would still be on the CD and they weren't, they were gone just like before
Ok, now we are getting close. But now I'm lost- because I have that problem too and have determined IT IS WIN 98.

Guys (all), I can record some "stuff" on a cd but not fill it up. I can see the contents in 98, 2000 and linux. If I put other files on the cd after the initial burn- i can only see the aditional files in 2000 and linux BUT NEVER IN 98. 98 sees the original burn, but not the subsequential files added later.

I have tried this on 4 different computers running 98 and have not been able to see the files. One of them is the dual boot with linux WHICH SEES THE ADDITIONAL FILES, eliminating hardware problems.

I'm not considering this thread hijacked, because I'm convinced the two problems are relative.
SPEEDO,

The shortcut trick didn't work, so I went to my computer and right clicked on my "F" drive and left clicked on eject.......nothing, so just for kicks I right clicked on my "E" drive,(used to be "D" drive) and left clicked eject and that drawer opened. You know SPEEDO, I have installed easy CD Creator 5, and when I use it to copy CD's the "F" drawer opens with the button sometimes. That's the only time it works, except during the restart process.

George
twas,

When dealing with computers I'm the biggest klutz that ever was.

When you say reboot, I assume you mean shut the computer down and then turn it back on. So I did that,(with my finger on the pause key). Now the pause key I used has pause on the top with a line under it and Break on the bottom. About the third item to appear was my Ram check. It counted up to 384, which is how much memory I have. When it hit 384 I pressed the pause key. everything stopped so I pressed the space bar, the start up continued till finished. I didn't see anything about drivers. Please don't give up.

George
G
Can you list what you have in your bios like the following.

You will need to hit pause real quick like twas said.
