Only reliable fix I've seen for this is a full destructive recovery to factory installation, or re-install from Windows XP CD, whichever applies to your PC.
If the update you're referring to was a Microsoft automatic update, I recommend you disable automatic updates in future. You never know what's being installed and it's certainly not unusual for an automatic update from MS to screw up a system.
Use manual updating in future, only when you really need an update to fix a specific problem. Use a good third-party firewall and antivirus and you should be fine without having to rely on Microsoft's endless string of security patches.
