I have a Gateway M-6846 laptop running Vista Home 64bit that has recently developed a problem. As the PC boots up, just after the BIOS screens disappears the speakers start issuing a static sound, like a loud carrier wave. The sound lasts until several minutes after Windows boots up, even during startup of a program like Thunderbird or MS Word 2007. Then it just stops. Other sounds seem fine, it plays music, voice, movies, Cds fine.
Just this annoying static at startup. All the drivers and Windows software is up to date with the newest drivers (newest sound driver in sometime like Sept or Oct 2008).
The laptop is just past the warranty period by a week so gateway won't talk to me without paid in advance support charge.
Anyone run across something like this before?

Thanks!

Bob
