Go to Control Panel and click on the Sounds and Audio icon. Click the Sounds tab, and at the bottom scroll to where it says Start Windows. In the Sounds drop-down menu, change "Windows XP Startup.wav" to "(None)".
another way you can do this is, if you have a different sound that you want windows to play just rename that sound "Windows XP startup" minus quotes and then copy it into :\Windows\Media and overwrite the current sound. im sure it would work. it would probably be easier to just make your own sound scheme though using the method they already told you about.
