From time to time during the startup process, and almost exclusively after I hit 'enter' at the password window and prior to netscape booting up, the blue screen will simply freeze. Generally, a restart will solve the problem but sometimes it requires restarting twice or even three times. From then on the system runs fine. I disc defrag and disc cleanup regularly and have spybot, adaware, etc installed. Any help or thoughts would be most appreciated.
p.s. Unlike an earlier post, nothing flashes on the screen prior to freezing.

try booting the computer with step-by-step confirmation check to c where the computer really hangs up

do you have norton installed? what virus/spyware programs did you run?

I appreciate the response. I will follow your advice during next startup. I have the following programs currently installed and running: Norton Anti Virus, Zone Alarm, Spybot S&D, AdAware SE Personal, OS Spam, and CCleaner. Will repost the results from next boot up. Thanks again.

norton could be part of the problem
there are other choices like avg, ewido, panda and macfee
try an online scan such as housecall next, check off autofix.

afterwards if the problem persists, it might be wise to post a hyjack log

uninstall norton with symantec removal tool. refer to their website and go to greynight's link below and follow the steps.
