Hi, I just signed up here because our computer has been driving us crazy. About a month ago or so we had a bad virus problem. We purchased Norton Anti-Virus and that got rid of the virus, and then we ran the system restore discs. But the computer will barely start up. If it ever does get running, it runs just fine. But every time we have to restart it, we have to try 3 or 4 times becuase it will just freeze when it gets to the desktop. While it's starting up, i'll try Ctr+Alt+Del and look at the tasks that are running, and it says that explorer isn't responding. I have no idea what could be causing that, I know that's a vital application, and I guess that's what is making it freeze up. But I have no idea how to fix it. I'm afraid that all the manual shut-downs are going to permanantly crash the computer. Is there anything I can do? Thank you so much in advance if there are any ideas!

What brand of computer do you have (Model number and any specs you have will be useful) and how old is it?

thank you for responding! we have a hewlett packard pavillion 7850, its about 2-2 1/2 years old. All I know is that it has a pentium 3 processor, it has about 40 gigabytes of memory (only half is used), 127 RAM.

Thank you for telling me that- it found 99 problems. It seemed to fix the problem, at first. But after rebooting three times, it froze again. It only took a second try to get it going, though; instead of the six times it took this morning. So I don't know if it was just a coincidence, or it helped.

Sorry if this doesn't make any sense (I don't know much about this as you can tell) or has nothing to do with anything, but it seems that when there's something else going on during the restart, like when you install a new program and it has to restart, and when it does it says updating configuration (or something), and has that progress bar and stuff, it boots up just fine.

Also, I wonder if one of the start up programs is causing the explorer.exe to stop responding, or if explorer even has anything to do with it.

Well, thank you for your help so far - I really appreciate anything you (or anyone) can do. I'll understand if there isn't anything that can help.

Well the virus may have done some damage to your system files before you managed to get rid of it. You may have to wipe the hard drive to get it as clean as possible and then do a re-install like you did before. Do you have a CD Burner in that machine? You will need to back up any important data before wiping the drive because all will be lost afterwards.

well, i'm not sure why it crashed that one time, but now it starts up just fine! thank you so much, i guess that spybot did the trick
