Hello,

I've posted this problem before, but I have finally found the culprit last night, and wanted some more help.

After troubleshooting and replacing every single component of my computer, I finally found out that my Samsung Evo 840 is causing my computer to randomly freeze. This has been happening in Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10.

Out of despair, I tried turning the SATA mode to IDE (it was set to AHCI), and now my SSD is working with a little less speed, but it is reliable, meaning there are no freezes and stops.

Although I'm happy to have "solved" the problem, I'd like to know if there is anything I can do to run everything in AHCI mode, and still avoid the problems I had so far?

Specs:
CPU: Intel Core i3-3240
Cooler: CoolerMaster Hyper 212+
MOBO: ASUS P8H77-M LE
PSU: Chieftec 600W SmartPower
RAM: 1x4GB DDR3 Samsung @1333MHz
GPU: Radeon HD6850 (MSI Cyclone)
SDD: Samsung Evo 840 120GB
HDD: 1000GB WD Green
HDD: 300GB Samsung

All Drivers are up-to-date
Firmwares are up-to-date
BIOS Update installed: latest

If Windows was installed or cloned from an IDE Mode configuration and then you turned AHCI on, then you would need to reinstall Windows with AHCI mode turned on. Or try this: AHCI : Enable in Windows 7 / Vista - Windows 7 Help Forums
Other then that, if it works in IDE mode, then you will have to live with it.

Turns out the MOBO drivers from ASUS' website are faulty...

Installed the drivers provided with Driver Pack Solution 15.7, and everything works like a charm!

This may or may not help people but I'll leave through trial and error what worked for me in the hope it might help someone else.

I have a dual boot PC with Windows 7 and Windows 10 installed on a Crucial M550 SSD and an Asus P6X58D-E motherboard (I also have other non SSD hard-drives in my system). Both OS worked without issue in IDE mode but I enabled AHCI through the BIOS to speed up the drive. Windows 7 was fine but for Windows 10 it introduces a major issue that froze the PC when it was idle for a few minutes. The mouse would move but it wouldn't respond and had to be rebooted. No change of LPM or HIPM/DIPM settings would fix it and I also have the latest BIOS and SSD firmware as of Nov 2016.

However, in the Asus BIOS for the P6X58D-E there are TWO settings for AHCI and as soon as I used a combination of IDE and AHCI rather than just AHCI, the freezes stopped happening:-

Storage Configuration -> SATA Configuration [Enhanced] -> Configure SATA as [IDE]
Advanced -> Onboard Devices Configuration -> Marvell 9128 Controller [AHCI Mode]

The combination above loads a combination of ATA Channel, Intel(R) ICH10 Family Serial ATA Storage Controllers and Standard SATA AHCI Controller for my hard-drives under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. The AHCI configuration that was freezing just loaded two Standard SATA AHCI Controllers.

I bench marked the SSD in this configuration and it is running at super fast speeds of AHCI (400Mb/s) but with the same stability I had in IDE mode.

Good luck - I was scratching my head for this for hours!

NB - I was able to switch between IDE and AHCI via a first boot in to safe mode to load the correct drivers each time and then a further reboot.
To turn safe mode on and off via command prompt use:-
bcdedit /set {current} safeboot minimal
bcdedit /deletevalue {current} safeboot
