All of the previous posts I've read have either had this problem solved, or been given a solution that I was afraid might be dated. (two years old)

So of course, the printer can't install because the file for the spooler is "not specified".

Under Services, Spooler reads "failed to read description: Error code 2".

Right-click for "start", it will read: Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.

Right click for "properties" just brings up: "system cannot find the file specified".

Checking for the Spooler in Registry Edit gave me this:


Is this different from the default, and is that why it's not working?

What is the make and model printer? Try uninstalling any printer software then unplugging the USB cable and restart the computer? Then go to the manufacturers support download drivers and type in your printer model # download an updated driver. don't plug in the USB cable till it tells you to in the driver install.

HP Officejet 6500. Did all of that already. Even when USB not connected, software won't download because of that error.

When you say Download do you mean, you cannot download from the internet from the HP site? or that you can't Install the downloaded file once you downloaded it?

Right, meant install, not download.

Anyway, these were one of the things I thought was dated, because there wasn't a "0002.SPL and
0002.SHD". Of course, then I looked again, and realized they were the same, but "updated" versions. (3 instead of 2)

Anyway, just deleted those, I'll get back and see how that works. Fingers crossed.

Unfortunately, that didn't work. Even cleared out recycle bin for good measure, and still can't activate the spooler under the services.

I have exactly the same problem with windows Vista (basic) and a Canon pixma mx410 printer. It had been working perfect for about 6 months. I have uninstalled the printer and its driver but when when I attempt to re-install I get the same message "reinstall printer spooler" when I go to windows services under spooler it reads "failed to read description error 2. I ran windows FIXIT with the same negative result. I even reinstalled the windows service pack 2 (which for some reason has sped up my computer) with no luck?? Does anybody know how to fix the problem. I do not have the CD for windows. I bought the computer at Best Buy and windows was pre-installed and with no CD. please help!!

I just read your advice regarding: spooler failed to read description error 2. I now have exactly the same problem lcwlcontacts. uninstalling the printer sofware from Canon pixma mx410 di not work. when I try to reinstall I get exactly the same error message of reinstalling the printer spooler which is missing from windows for some unknown reason.

If it came from best buy it will be a brand name system. These will come with either recovery CDs or a recovery partition that can restore your machine yo factory
