Sound doesn't work sometimes: "Host Process for Windows Services stopped working..."

I recently got a new laptop and I've been having a lot of trouble with the sound. It is the laptop seen here:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=9353353&type=product&id=1218090329155

Sometime the audio works, but then if I pause a song and attempt to resume it a few minutes later, errors occur and the audio seems to be disabled.

"Windows Audio has stopped working" flashes quickly, followed by:

"Host Process for Windows Services stopped working and was closed
A problem caused the application to stop working correctly. Windows will notify you if a solution is available."

Then, if I right click on the small volume icon in the bottom right by the time, go to "Playback Devices" I get the following message:

"This computer cannot play audio because the Windows Audio Service is not enabled.

Would you like to enable the Windows Audio Service?"

I click yes and the audio works again, but even after this it still acts funny.

Things of note:
  • Sometimes the Volume Up/Down/Off buttons on my keyboard work, and sometimes they do not.
  • After this problem occurs and I restart it by going to Playback Devices, the audio cannot be turned up/down in Windows Media Player. I must manually adjust my (external) speakers.
  • I'm using Windows Media Player because Songbird and iTunes seem to freeze up every time I try to play music through them
  • When I first got my laptop, I installed a few programs and ran into some problems (I forgot exactly what they were), so I reinstalled Windows. I thought I updated every driver fully...
  • This problem has been occuring since purchase. No single even happened that made it start occuring frequently.
Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Hi -

Run a DirectX kernel diag report -
START | dxdiag | if x64, bottom-center "64-bit" | save as text - bottom-center

Zip the text file up and attach to your next post.

Go to the Windows Search bar and type services.msc and hit enter. Scroll down to Windows Audio service and right click it and choose Properties. Make sure the Startup Type is set to Automatic and the service is started. Apply and OK.

I just tried this. It was already started, and set to Automatic.

Hi -

Thanks for the DirectX kernel rpt.

You are in need of device driver updates across the board.
Code:

If my system, I would take back and demand a NEWer one. When buying a new Vista system today, look for one with Vista SP2 installed. If no SP2 - don't buy it! No doubt this one has been in storage for most/ all of 2009.

I was hoping it wouldn't be something devastating. I bought this from Best Buy and they have a 14 day return policy, but I have had it more than 14 days. Ugh...

What exactly would I be looking/asking for? A newer what?

I wasn't really having trouble with it a lot yesterday, but when I shut it down and started it back up today it is giving me issues again.
