I have an old 2004 HP OEM, a1540n that's currently running Windows 7.

I recently installed a new video card, an Asus ENGT430.

After doing so, my wireless network card stopped working as did any sound that didn't come from the HDMI port on the new video card. After reinstalling the various hardware and their drivers, testing the hardware in other machines, and the usual troubleshooting... I still could not use my wireless internet. I took my machine to a more savvy friend who was also stumped. He was in the process of backing up my data to do a full OS reinstall, when suddenly the wireless started working again. Neither one of us understand how it happened.

But, my machine still refuses to play any sound through the line out ports, VGA, or DVI. It will only play sound through the HDMI port.

Mostly I just want to be able to play sound through my logitech speakers or head phones, rather than the monitor speakers. But I am curious about what initially might have caused these conflicts.

Did you set the primary sound output in the sound properties to the card and not your onboard sound? You would just need to simply set the output back to your onboard.

Well check if it's still set to your onboard audio then and not the card. I believe the card won't send audio through the hdmi cable unless it's specifically set to so it's probably just set to hdmi.

Sorry, I didn't explain very well. Nothing else is recognized as a device that CAN produce sound, except what the HDMI is plugged into. So, right now, I have my logitech speakers plugged into the rear port and my head phones in the front. As far as my computer is concerned, they don't exist.

To enter the bios you need to hit the correct key when the machine first turns on (usually delete or one of the F keys) to "enter bios setup". This is done before windows loads. From here you you should be able to find a setting that disables the onboard sound or not.

If this was disabled for whatever reason that would definitely make the sound card not show in windows.
