sounds like the backlight has gone
SONY VAIO PCVV200G screen not 'clearly' visible
My SONY VAIO PCVV200g's screen is not visible completely. When I boot the pc i see SONY and BOOT SCREENS but after that the screen light disappears and I can see in black very dark screen.

so NOW WHAT SHOULD MY NEXT STEP BE
shine a strong light onto the screen and see what you see
I see all the WINDOWS XP START MENU APPLICATIONS TASK BAR EVERYTHING
then it looks like the backlight needs replacing
Does the back light work on the bios post but not while the machine is booting or in the os? Test in a dark room
backlight does not work in BIOS

The backlight is the neon light behind the screen that lights it up so you can see it , you should be able to find an entire replacement screen for the laptop on ebay
Ah , I didn't know they still made viao desktops.
