sony replacement screen

I know some one with a Sony VIAO laptop that has a broken screen. I was under the impression that they had to be sent back to the manufacturer to be replaced, but after a search I see that replacement screens can be bought. my question is do the Sonys have any problems with replacing the screens?? most of the experience Ive had with Sonys is that there normally very proprietary. Is replacing the screen a problem on then, I just want to make sure that before I have the guy spend a few hundred dollars on a screen that I can put it in for him when it comes, I just dont want any surprises.

I do not think Vaio uses proprietary screens. But even then, the safest is to use the same part number (at the back of the LCD if you have removed it already) so there will be no question on compatibility.
ok, but also they shouldn't require any special tools or anything right. nothing a sony tech would have to do?
