Sony DRU-510a trouble

1216 Views 2 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  lmcdill
I have been burning with this drive since 2003 with no problems. Just last week I sat down to burn a dvd and inserted the blank media and the burner would not recognize it. The burner sits there with the light going acting like it is trying to read the disk, but it won't. If you insert a cd-r data disk it would read it. I understand that there are seperate lasers for the cd and dvd aspects? Could a drive just quit like this? I took it out and used a microfiber cloth to clean the lasers, but that did not work. I have also uninstalled it, updated firmware and tried restoreing system to an earlier date but it still won't work. My computer tells me no changes have been made to the system to warrant the system restore. Is the drive just shot?? Thanks for the help

Hi, welcome to TSF

It could be faulty media. Try the blank DVD on another computer or another drive if you have one. Can you burn DVDs from another batch of discs?

If the laser has gone, then the drive will have to be replaced.
It's the same media I have been using when it was working and this included sony dvd-r media. I am figuring I will just have to replace it, but wanted to try and verify this first. If I would replace it, what is a good brand to stick with? Thanks for the help.
