Graphics Card : 1GB ATI RADEON HD4650
PSU : Corsair 550W 41A on +12V
Proccessor: AMD Phenom 9650 Quad Core 2.3GHz x 4
OS: Windows Vista 32 bit
RAM: 4 Gig
Motherboard : Asrock K10N78M
Main Optical Drive: 22x Dual Layer DVD +/- Rewriter
Network Adapter: Integrated 10/100/1000Mbps - Included
TFT Monitor: 19" HannsG HW191D Widescreen VGA/DVI, 700:1, 5ms

Hey guys apologised for constantly posting about a similar subject each time, i currently have 1GB ATI RADEON HD4650 and i was advised by this forum to upgrade to a HD RADEON 6770 which i want to do, read great reviews on the 6770 and it will run really well with my PSU , however my freinds saying i can
have his old GeForce GT 9600, i checked the comparison of that graphics card as apposed to mine (1GB ATI RADEON HD4650), andthe GT destroys mine with performance capabilities, would the GT run games such as Aion and WOW in maxxed graphics? , only really plan on playing those games and maybe some total war games for the moment, dont plan on playing things like battlefield3 crysis and stuff...

I was just thinking, its free ^^ free is always good, and i can save more money and then upgrade all my
system at once.

my monitor is TFT Monitor: 19" HannsG HW191D Widescreen VGA/DVI, 700:1, 5ms is this worth upgrading ?

last stupid question is, can you run a HD graphics card with your monitor , using a hdmi cable or does it have to
be DVI ? is DVI a monitor HD cable?

Hello Reece12sky and welcome to TSF :partytime:

Here's a great website that I like to use, it clearly compares the two specs :)

GeForce 9600 GT 1GB vs Radeon HD 6770 1GB – Performance Comparison Benchmarks @ Hardware Compare

As you can see, the Radeon is actually the better performing card. Okay, the bus width is lower but, on balance, the Radeon is better.

Please don't take this as me saying that the GT is a bad GPU - far from it actually. They are both amazing graphics cards, top of the range, the Radeon is slightly better, but the GT is still very good. If it is free, then I would go for the GT and as you said, you can always upgrade it at a later date.

Stupid questions don't exist, the only stupid thing is a person who doesn't ask them! HD video can be displayed through both DVI and HDMI - HDMI is the newer 'replacement' for DVI. Both audio and video are sent through a HDMI cable, plus it has something called HDCP. DVI doesn't have HDCP (only really used in TVs - I just included it as an interesting fact) and the sound has to go through another cable.

Your monitor is kind of holding you back regarding your graphics, both your computer and your graphics card are more than capable of running at full HD (1920*1080) whereas your monitor can only display 1440*900. To be honest, if your current one isn't bothering you, then I wouldn't upgrade it, but if you do have some cash lying around and would prefer a full HD monitor, then I would certainly consider buying one.

Hope this helps! If you have any further questions then please feel free to ask.

Tom

A 9600GT for free? Grab it and don't look back! Sure, it may not be as fast as the 6770, but it is far and away faster than the 4650. I suspect it will give you the performance you are looking for, but so what if it doesn't? What will you be out?

wow the comparisons from my old GPU with the one im getting for a free are HUGE :)
and it will easily run Aion , in full settings :) im certainly gunna go with the free GPU :)

im picking it up on friday when i get time off work, im also gunna buy a DVI cable im using an old VGA cable at the moment....but my monitor supports both DVI and VGA..so with a digital signal will look much better hopefully.

Ok so ive done some research on monitors...

And im confused...so my graphics quality, is gunna be mainly my graphics cards max res, monitors max res, and as long as input like a DVI cable supports a higher res than both my graphics card and monitor all will be good ?

i read for hours on web but can never understand it..

ive been looking at two monitors both the same manufacturer and model , with with the same max res, one being 21.5 inch one being like 27 inch , wouldnt the 27inch look poorer because its stretched over more screen ? i have no clue wanting to buy a new monitor , that will work well with later upgrades like when i upgrade to 6770..

So if my graphics card is HD and my monitor is HD, i can used a HDMI cable ? which will support a high resoloution ?

Aslong as my graphics card and monitor have decent resoloutions , mainly my graphics card, im gunna get a decent imaige ?

I just dont wanna buy a monitor, get an improved picture with GT9600 , then later buy a 6770 HD RAD , and end up not getting much of an improvement because the monitor i bought doesnt support the max reso of the new graphics card...

is HDMI better than DVI on a PC? is HDMI compatible with higher res's?

my brains melting ha

oh and should i use dual link DVI , so complexed..

The 27" monitor will be using a much higher native resolution than the 21". This will mean lower framerates.

You get the same resolution and image quality with DVI and VGA cables. You can use either. The main advantage of HDMI is that the cable can carry audio as well as video data, but this is more relevant for TVs and home theatre setups rather than gaming.

Post links to the monitors so we can see their details.

oh right , read about native resoloution , so the larger monitor will have a higher native reso, so it will run more more higher resoloutions with more ease...cool i understand that..

the two monitors..that i looked at were just random...ill list them , but if someone could point me towards a good one to buy...then that would be much appreciated, budget not a major issue, maybe £100-200...

here's the two i was looking at..

21.5
BenQ RL2240H 22" Widescreen LED Monitor - White []

27
BenQ G2750 27" Widescreen LED Monitor - Black []

I just want the monitor i purchase, to support the majority of high end graphics cards, so when i upgrade the GT9600 someone is giving me, i can get full use and max res outta it.

whats Dual link DVI cables ? how would i know whether the cable was compatible , and i saw they support huge resoloutions. thanks...

oh and what are the main specs to take note of ?

Native Res

refresh rate ? is the the e.g 70HZ

edit...i just checked native res for both , says 1920 x 1080 for both.

You get the same resolution and image quality with DVI and VGA cables. You can use either. QUOTE]

but whats the purpose of DVI ? could you explain it , i thought the cable could support higher resoloutions and a digital signal transfers better than analogue?

With LCD monitors, you need to use the native resolution to get the sharpest image. Using any other resolutions can sometimes make the display look blurry.

The 2 monitors you're looking at use 1920x1080, but the 22" has a better response time of 2ms which means less screen tearing during fast action sequences.

You won't need a dual link cable unless the monitor supports more than 1920x1080. Stick with the regular VGA, DVI or HDMI.

The refresh rate for LCDs is 60Hz.

Iiyama ProLite E2208HDS-B 22" Widescreen LCD Monitor - £116 (1920x1080, DVI, VGA, 2ms, built-in speakers)

Iiyama ProLite B2409HDS-B 24" Widescreen LCD Monitor - £177 (1920x1080, DVI, VGA, HDMI, 2ms, built-in speakers)

I use VGA and DVI cables for my monitors and can't tell the difference. They both give the same image quality, so don't worry about the different cables.

ok ill purchase a DVI cable since my VGA is ancient and loose, making screen blurr every now and then...

there are alot of type of DVI ? how would i buy the correct one ? just buy any ?

oh so if LCD's refresh rate is 60hz , which type of monitors run 120hz refresh rate ? i hear alot of people saying 120hz makes a huge difference, i mean it wont for my gaming....WOW and AION etc..

looking at both of those monitors you listed now..

but say i had a hd radeon 6770 wouldnt that have a really high capabilty resoloution , say if i used dual DVI ? higher than listed monitors ? whats max res for 6770 ?

forgot to mention that the GT 9600 is only 516mb of video ram, your guides for the 1gb ram gpu , and you said its proberly the second most important factor on performance etc. so you reckon the 1gb runs similar to 512mb ? much diff?

how are you meant to know which DVI cable you should use

cool guide btw

Hey i myself have a Geforce 9600 gt and i play WoW (World of WarCraft, i hope thats what you were refering to) on maxed graphics. the only time it gets a big choppy is in the newest cata instances other than that it does great. My only Dislike about the card is mine gets really hot, might not be an issue if ur comp has better air circulation than mine. All in all great card. Btw mine is a PNY Geforce 9600 gt thats the only version i have seen with the heat problem.
