Some help finding the right cpu for my mobo

1975 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Deleted090308
I've recently discovered that I will have to replace my cpu due to bottlenecking. At first I thought my 8800 gts oc 640mb and 2 gigs of kingston 6400 800 mhz RAM wasnt enough, but after some tweaking research i found out that my cpu (AMD Athlon 64 X2 4000+ 2.1 ghz) is supposedly a dinosaur in the cpu line. Sorry if my wording is hard to understand, but I was up all night and I'm pretty beat. I just want Oblivion to run kickass and i'll be happy, but I want a cpu that will be fully compatible with my mobo cuz I've already spent alot of money on stuff for my pc that didnt work or just wasnt made for it. I need some help getting the best cpu I can get for my mobo, cuz im lost when it comes to cpu. I definitely have the power supply (800 watt) but I'm not sure if my mobo can handle a more powerful cpu. My mobo has no overclocking capabilities whatsoever, and plus im new to cpus. I'll give my specs. Any help would be much appreciated.

Mobo: Asus M2A-VM (not HDMI)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4000+, Socket AM2 (940)
Power supply: 800 watts
RAM: 2 GB Kingston DDR2 SDRAM 6400 Dual Channel 800 mhz
Graphics Card: BFG Nvidia Geforce 8800 GTS 640MB OC

Sorry Eneles,
Was replying at same time as you. lol
Thanks for the help! My new AMD 64 X2 6400 3.2ghz is now on its way! Now I just need to find a guide on replacing the cpu and I'll be good. One last question as well, are there any ideas as far as air cooling? Does the stock fans usually do the deed or will I need to get a better fan? Thanks for the help.
Hi.
Make sure you have BIOS 1002 at least.
http://support.asus.com/technicaldocuments/technicaldocuments.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&root=252

You're instructions for install of your processor are included in your motherboard manual, downloadable from here.....
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Stock fans are usually fine, and you're better waiting til you install it and then checking your temps, to see if it's up to the job or too noisy etc.
I have the stock fan on my Pentium E6600, running with 4GB RAM and an 8600GTS and it's quiet and cool.
Hi just as an aside........if you're gonna be gaming heavy, make sure your pc case has a fan at the front taking air in, and a fan at the rear, taking air out. Good quality 12cm fans.
I just got it today and installed but i noticed my heatsink would not strap in straight. So i been testing temps all day long and the cpu is usually 43 degrees celsius and core #1 is 40 and #2 is 48 when idle. I searched everywhere to find out if its normal but no luck. I did manage to test with OCCT and I got 60 degrees for the cpu with 100% usage and 50 degrees for core #1 and 59 degrees for #2 all under 100% cpu usage, and I ran the test for at least 15 min. Is this a normal temp or should I try adjusting the heatsink better? I'm kinda nervous about that because I have no thermal paste to replace the old. I will also mention that I do have a fan located at the side and rear of the case. Thanks in advance.
It's a bit hot.
You have to reapply thermal paste every time the heatsink is removed.

Use Arctic Silver.
