Re: XP Locked Up....Windows Explorer Crashes [Moved from HJT]

Hi,

Start the computer with the Windows CD.
At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to select the repair option.
You will have to enter the Administrator password - if none, just press <Enter>.
In the recovery console - type chkdsk c: /r > press <Enter>.
When the disk check is done:
Type Exit > press <Enter>.
Take the Windows disc out and reboot.

And - run diagnostic tools from the HDD manufacturer.

I can't find the CDs that came with the computer. I made a boot disk following the instructions I found on techsupport for xp. Will the boot disk work for your instructions? Thanks

Sorry - wrong instructions. You can run chkdsk /r in Windows:

Right click the drive in "My computer" >> Properties >> Tools >> Check now. Tick both options and click "Start":

What brand/model is the hard drive?

New problem.....XP will not boot. Loads to the screen were the windows icon pops up like its loading then just restarts and asks if I want to boot in safe mood, smw/networking, or last known configuration that worked. I tried them all and none of them would let XP load. What now??? :4-dontkno

You have to run the HDD manufacturer's diagnostic tools.
You can find the HDD model on the first page in BIOS - something like WD1234XYZ.
Post that name/number and we can find the appropriate tool.

Re: XP Locked Up....Windows Explorer Crashes [Moved from HJT]

Here is the number I got off the BIOS: IC25N080ATMRO4-0. This computer has 2 hardrives and it had looked to me (Not sure what I am looking at) that the bad blocks are on the d drive and windows is loaded on the c drive (from deckards scan) not sure if I am reading that write or if it matters. Thanks.

Do you have a link to that support page?

You will need an XP disc - see if you can borrow one with the same version of Windows you have installed (Home/Pro).

The drive is "sick" and will, in all likelihood, get worse.
You should replace the drive before you lose valuable data.
