Hey guys,

Ive got a Dell Optiplex 755 thats running Ubuntu at the moment. I want to install Windows XP on it. I know its a sort of a downgrade its just that i prefer XP :)

However upon trying to install the XP CD (genuine copy) on the machine - i get this error :

HTML:
rchive: /media/HP_OS_RESTORE/setup.exe
[/media/HP_OS_RESTORE/setup.exe]
End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not
a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the
latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on
the last disk(s) of this archive.
zipinfo: cannot find zipfile directory in one of /media/HP_OS_RESTORE/setup.exe or
/media/HP_OS_RESTORE/setup.exe.zip, and cannot find /media/HP_OS_RESTORE/setup.exe.ZIP, period.
I tried to run the installation by booting from the CD, but it doesn't boot from the CD..

Any idea on whats going wrong?

Thanks

you are using an hp oem. you cannot legally use it on any computer other than the one it originally came with. you will have to purchase a full retail version of xp.

first you cannot install it on more than one computer at a time. just because an illegal copy may have worked on one computer dont mean it will work on others. If it did not come with the other computers you say it is on, those are also illegal install. OEM softwre can only be installed on the computer it came with. It can never be installed on any other computer.

based on what you said so far, if you purchased a legal full retail version of xp then you should not get that error.

Re: Xp installation problem on Ubuntu Pc

Ok now im kinda having the same problem, im unable to get it to boot from the CD. I went into BIOS to check the settings. It has SATA 0 and SATA 1 - i can't remember which of these was the CD drive, however they were both enabled. I wasn't able to change the boot order for some reason, i went into the option but on pressing ENTER to change the order nothing happened.

When i boot the PC with the CD in the drive i can't hear the CD spinning for it to boot from it. The CD only starts to spin once the PC has loaded Ubuntu completely. And when i try and run the setup from there, i get the same error as posted above in post #1 (excluding the OEM part)

Any idea whats going on guys?

Press F12 at bootup. Here you can change the Boot Order and choose CD drive first boot device. You can also boot into Setup (Bios) choose Boot or Boot Order and make CD Rom drive first boot device. Put the XP CD in and restart the computer. You should get the message Press Any Key to Boot From CD.

Hey spunkfunk,

Here's the problem. I did press F12 to attempt to change the boot order to CD first. However i can only see this:

SATA1 - WDC WD*********SA3, which is the HDD, below that its got

*System Setup &
* Diagnostics

-----------------------

Its almost like the PC is not detecting the CD/DVD rom drive for some reason. But ive check the CD/DVD drive, it works perfectly once the pc has booted up. I have also tried to boot with the XP CD in the pc - no luck...

Then boot into Setup (Bios) Is the CD drive showing up there? If not, then it will not be recognized as a boot device. Look to Boot Order. The CD rom may have been disabled as a boot device. You can Enable it by using your arrow key, pressing Enter and hitting the space bar so that there is a number in front of it. Now use the U key to move it up to the first position in the Boot Order.

Re: Xp installation problem on Ubuntu Pc

When i try to run the *diagnostics option i get a "Floppy diskette seek failure" - Strike F1 to conti, F2 to run setup utility and F5 to run on board diagnostics.

Now i do believe its got an internal floppy drive option which i haven't heard of before. I don't have a physical floppy drive attached to the computer. Do i set this option to OFF in BIOS?

In BIOS options its got - OFF, USB, INTERNAL and READ ONLY as the options.

Yes i have booted into Setup (BIOS) and i can see the CD drive under Drives --> SATA 0 (CD drive) & it is set to ON.

When i enter BIOS i go to System --> Boot Sequence --> and this is the screen i get. There are no numbers in front of it and i can't change any order.

In Boot Sequence you should see Floppy Drive. Using your arrow key, select it and press enter. Reading at the bottom of this page it will tells you how to change values. You want to remove it from the Boot sequence, usually by pressing the space bar.
Same for the CD drive, you want to Add it to the Boot sequence. Documentation

Re: Xp installation problem on Ubuntu Pc

From the documentation
Changing Boot Sequence for Future Boots

Enter system setup.

Use the arrow keys to highlight the Boot Sequence menu option and press <Enter> to access the menu.
This is what i can't do...

At Boot Sequence on the Left Panel press Enter, it will now show the drives on the Right side. Look at the bottom of the page on how to change values. Documentation
