[SOLVED] Would like some help getting a new CPU

I didn't want to triple post just to bump my old topic*

Okay the motherboard I have is a MICRO-STAR MS-7379 and it has an
Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo CPU E4500 @ 2.20GHz Conroe Socket 775 LGA processor. I am looking at spending around $130 ish to get a new CPU to compliment the graphics card I recently purchased (Radeon 5770). My motherboard is kind of old so I don't think I could use an I-3 chip.

Would I have to get a new motherboard to use a newer I-3 chip such as this one http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Produc...m_re=Intel_Core_i3_530-_-19-115-222-_-Product it's not in the compatibility list for the motherboard, would there be any way to use it?

If I would not be able to use a chip such as that, do you think either of these are good chips for the price? http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4389472&sku=I69-7500 and http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115207

Here is the list of compatible CPU's for my motherboard http://www.msi.com/index.php?func=prodcpu2&prod_no=1293&maincat_no=1

i3, i5, i7 are different sockets, you have a 775 socket board, if you could squeeze a couple more dollars into the budget the Q8300 would be a big improvement > http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115207
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

I don't know much about CPU's, are there any other components I need to check to make sure they would work with this chip? Would I have to buy and apply any thermal paste? I see under specifications it comes with a heat sink and fan. My power supply is a Corsair 550 so it should be good enough I think.
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

The heat sink that comes with the CPU will have thermal paste on it.

Motherboard is all you have to concerned with for CPU compatibility you will need at least the 7379v74 bios which appears to be the latest version. Flash the Bios before swapping the CPU.
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

On the manufacturer website I see 7379v74.zip under results at the side column for that chip. I am assuming if I google Flashing BIOS it will tell me what to do with that zip to replace my current bios with that one?
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

I downloaded something called Live Update from the MSI website to make sure everything was updated when I formatted a little bit ago. Could I use this or does this sort of thing have to be done from a flash drive or cd?
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Bios updates should never be done over the internet. MSI "should" have instructions on their site.
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Well I went to the MSI forum and found this tutorial http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=116721.0 which I think I will be able to do after a couple of read throughs. The only thing I haven't seen is am I supposed to flash with my old CPU in the computer, then take it out and put the new one in. Or do I put the old one in then flash?

*EDIT* Also I see that there is a different method used depending on whether you BIOS is AMI or AWARD, in CPU-Z under BIOS I see American Megatrends, is that AMI?
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

You need to do the Bios update using the old CPU.
Yes, AMI is American Megatrends.
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Yes that's AMI.

Flash with the current CPU in, all Bios are backwards compatible the current cpu will run on any newer Bios, the new CPU may not run on the older bios.
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Mhmm how can I tell if the BIOS I have right now is the newest BIOS? In the MSI Live program I mentioned earlier it says
CURRENT BIOS VERSION 7.40
ONLINE BIOS VERSION 7.40
Does this mean I already have the most up to date one and don't have to flash?
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Looks like you have the latest, it should also be on the first post screen.
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

In POST it says A7379IMS V7.4 071708
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Version 7.4 from July 17, 2008 is the latest.
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Good, that's the one I seem to have. Now that I know I have the right BIOS and the card is under compatible CPU's for my motherboard, I have done all I need to make sure I can use it?
Re: Would like some help getting a new CPU

Well thank you very much for your time and help, hopefully all will go well once I get it and install it. You guys are great!
