[SOLVED] Wireless Internet connection failure

8397 Views 4 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  spunk.funk
We have an old Windows XP desktop computer with which we need a wireless connection. We bought the Netgear N-300 USB WNA3100 wireless adapter. Once the driver was installed, it worked pretty nicely. But over the weeks, the Internet connection kept failing. Rarely, it works, but right now it's dead.

The Wireless Network Connection taskbar icon, as well as the NETGEAR version, say that there is a good connection. But the internet doesn't work--both Internet Explorer and Firefox.

What's the problem?

(Also, ipconfig says that DCHP is off, if that matters.)

Re: Wireless Internet connection failure

Hi Zucriy Amsuna,

Try re-installing the wireless network card drivers and see if that helps. Also, since this is a USB wireless card adapter, unplug it and try plugging the device onto another USB port and see if that helps out. Are other computers able to access the wireless internet fine?
Re: Wireless Internet connection failure

Go into the Router Setup and make sure DHCP is enabled. (Check you documentation for your router, or the manufacturers web site for your model router to know how to do this, or run the Setup CD for the router)
Also, go to Start/Run and type ncpa.cpl and press enter. Right click the Wireless adapter and make sure it is enabled. then choose Properties. Scroll down to Network Protocol (TCP-IP)/Properties make sure Obtain an IP Address and DNS server address automatically are both checked.
If this still fails, uninstall the software in Add Remove Programs and remove the adapter and restart, then reinstall the driver and software.
Re: Wireless Internet connection failure

Changing the Internet Protocol properties did the trick. At least for now.

Thank you. ^_^
