I'm using PC Tools Firewall and Avast anti-virus, which seems to slow my windows xp down, especially after leaving the computer on during the day. I also installed NVIDIA GeForce4 Ti 4200 with AGP4X, which took away my ram memory. I have 1gb of ram memory. I also have Spybot - SD, ThreatFire, Spyware Terminator, System Protect all on startup when I turn my computer on. Is there anyway of improving my compter?

Re: Windows xp slows down

How extensive is the slow down? Are we talking just a noticeable difference or to the point where you can't use the computer? Try disabling all those programs that are running at start up and see if there is any difference. You can go into msconfig to edit start up items. If you come across a program that you don't know what it is you can Google it and it will tell you what it is. You can also go to this site and it will tell you what the program is and if it is safe to disable it. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/startups/

Re: Windows xp slows down

It seem to have improved a bit better after I put back the original ram memory sticks. I'm using pctools firewall, is that a good firewall program? I'm also using avast anti virus program, is that a good program to use. I did go into msconfig to take off some programs at start up, and it seemed to improve it.

I don't know about the firewall, actually I've never heard of it. Avast is a pretty good AV you should be fine there.

Other things you can do to speed up your PC is to run a disk cleanup, i use ccleaner which does an excellent job. Or you can use the one that come with Windows. And you can defragment your hard drive as well.
