Good Evening All,

I've spent some time trying to overcome the above problem, which came to light via an action centre message yesterday. This follows on from another problem where I had 2 Microsoft Updates which kept installing themselves over and over. I ran various 'Fixits', which didn't, so eventually I just hid the 2 offending updates.

I have tried a system restore which didn't work, and now I find that there are no restore points before today's date, and yes, I have clicked on 'show more restore points'.

The Windows update service is set to Automatic (delayed) but wont start no matter what.

Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Re: Windows Update Won't Start

Thanks for the reply.

It is Windows 7 64 bit Home Premium as per my sig. It is an OEM version so I believe that I don't have the ability to do a repair instal.

I have done a sfc /scannow and found no problems.

Re: Windows Update Won't Start

Hi Again,

I have just used kb971058 fixit, and it seems to have done the trick.

Somehow I have lost all my update history as well as all my restore points, but the update feature is now working ok.

Thanks for you efforts.

Could be worth running an AV scan as some malware will wipe out your restore points to prevent you from going back, but have a look at this article to see if any of those steps can help retain what are made in future.

Thanks, I read the article attached and upon checking the settings got a 0x80070032 error message which led me to Task Scheduler not running. I've started that and all seems well, no sign of malware either.

Thanks.

Update:

It seems impossible to set Task Manager to Auto start. The only option not greyed out is 'start', but once the 'start' function is selected, there is no possibility of selecting 'auto'.

Mine is totally greyed out and default set to Automatic.

What is it set to ?

Has it created any restore points that you could revert to ?

Reading back through the article that I'd attached, which settings had you checked which gave you the error code and subsequent resolution ?

Mine is greyed out and set to manual, so it doesn't start at startup and therefore doesn't set any restore points. If I manually create a restore point it remains in place, I have created 2 restore points.
I'll get back to you about the error message, just have to check a few things first.

Rob.

PS: OK, I got the error message by going to system properties and clicking on 'Configure'. Because the Task Scheduler was not running, I could not configure the properties. Now, the only way to start the Task Scheduler is manually, the only key not greyed out is 'start' and once I click 'start' everything is greyed out.

I think you may have to back up your files and do a factory reset to get out of that one as the sfc /scannow didn't do anything and I'm not sure if booting up while tapping F8/Repair the Computer and running the Startup Repair option would do it either - but you could try it.

Thanks. I don't think factory reset is an option, it would need to be a re install of Windows I think, in which case I'll just live with it.

Tried the eset link, it claimed to have restored 45 services, but the problem remains. The Task Scheduler Service wasn't actually disabled, it was just not displaying all it's options.

OEM disks don't allow a repair install, it's part of the trade off in purchasing an OEM disc. But I do have a repair disc which I created when I installed Windows 7 fresh. I guess I could try to boot from that?

Rob.

PS: Fair enough, too, it's only 1230 here in Oz.

After a bit more searching, I found the attached advice on the web. I changed the Start setting from 2 to 3, the Type setting was already correct.

Now, Task Scheduler starts automatically at bootup. The options are still greyed out, but I no longer need to change them so It doesn't matter.

Thanks for your help, Tom
