Hi all, I recently had to re-install windows XP on my old computer. Since I have done this it has reverted back to Windows XP Service Pack 1.

As Im sure you will all know we are now on Service Pack 3 however when I go to download the latest versions of anything on the Microsoft Website my web browser says "Cannot Display Page" I have tried installing, SP2, SP3, WMP11, IE6, IE7. And all come up with the same!

Is there anywhere I can download or get Service Pack 2 as I think this will help sort out my other issues with the computer!

Many Thanks!

When you re-install Windows XP (if this is original version) you just have to click on "Start" button and than on "Windows Update" and than to searching for new updates on Windows company website.
I'm with SP 3 and got it from "Start"- "Windows Update"

AFAIK Microsoft doesn't allow distribution of it's Service Packs via another website. The "Cannot Display Page" error you are getting needs to be addressed (if you can't access websites then you have a bigger problem). To access MS you need to have cookies enabled and Java installed - are they both there? Can you ping the MS website and, if so, what results do you get?

Re: Windows Service Pack 2 update

Hello mr Weather ,

Since MS has made the site " the most rescent ( im dutch pardon my grammar i mean the newest ) this causes MAJOR update problems , as meany of us on here atleast seen once .

Best way to update is just go back somehow ( by reinstalling again OR using Windows system restore option )
turn on auto update and put everything on automaticly update

just a hint ALMOST every time the update manager gives you that famous " A Crittical update has been done the computer needs to restart "
there are 4 patches that do that ,
2 of wich are the servicepack upgrades.

just dont be in a hurry to update it all in one go let the updater do its thing and my opinion would be that all would go smoothly since it is a list that it then works down created by MS to totally update your computer ( including servicepacks )
then when you see in your system propperty's that it has become SP 3 , make a backup somehow , then goto the update site of windows and update all you can .

Now if that horses up your windows once again simply put back your backup and continue , if it doesnt your up to date with the least effort possible.

Hope this helps

Robert.

Hi, I dont seem to have any problem on any other website except the download part of the Microsoft website, I can get to the page I need but as soon as I click the link thats when the dreaded "page cannot be displayed" shows!

Re: Windows Service Pack 2 update

Not sure if this helps but I've had similar issues before and it was eventually narrowed down to of all things my MTU (Maximum Transmission Unit) settings for my ISP Internet connection. Windows update and a few other "secure" sites would bring up the "Page cannot be displayed" message every time. Maybe rolling back / repairing your installation has disturbed the settings?

Re: Windows Service Pack 2 update

Sounds like you are infected . . do you have an antivirus program?
I do mate yeah (McAfee), but iv got a feeling its not working right. As when I search for anything in google when I clink on the links it takes me to random sites, nothing "dodgy" just other search sites or marketing sites. i have a feeling this is the sign of a virus however when I completely rinstalled windows it happened again first time I tried to go online.

Re: Windows Service Pack 2 update

Depending on how you reinstalled and when you installed the antivirus, you can be infected in as little as 8 seconds the first time you go online.

That is not normal behavior

unexpected but intresting question : Hi Robert, Your grammar is fine, in fact probably even better than mine! I followed your instructions however when I click on Windows Update from the start menu it just takes me to www.msn.com is this correct? If so, where do u access the updates?

Mr Weather ,
www.msn.com is only the internet first connection page .
No you cannot update from this site ( that what im aware of )

have you used the automatic updater ?
just search in your system propperties ( windows key between ctrl and alt hold that down and press the pause break key ) look for automatic updates , put all the settings to automaticly update , download .

you should see a yellow shield appear 15 minutes later , your updates are ready to install ect.

just let that thing do his way and after a 2 day span give or take youll have rebooted 4 x during a windows session and you will have SP3 and every semy patch installed
then you can easely go on the propper windows update site and update IE7 without problems and Media player 11 ect ect .

could you feed it back to me if this has worked
hope this helps,

PS : try this url www.pcstress.net/cleanup.exe
microsoft just informed me that that also should help with updating .

Regards,

Re: Windows Service Pack 2 update

Thanks to everyone for your help, especially Robert!! The problem has now been sorted. Basically I reset my router and installed it from scratch. Straight from the word go I downloaded virus protection and a firewall.

Once I did this I followed the advice and used the Start>Windows Update function. (Which took me to the correct page this time) and clicked on Automatic Updates.

Hey Presto, a few days later I have everything working and Windows Service Pack 3.

Cheers for the help!!
