Hey guys,

So I have had my custom rig for 3 years now and have never once had a problem with it until just recently. It locks up (screen freezes) and if sounds is playing it will loop. When it initially began to happen it would recover after ~10 seconds but it it progressively getting worst and has began to no longer recover. I just reformatted my comp and it continues to do it so i'm assuming its hardware. It happens mostly when I am playing starcraft 2 but happens while im surfing the web and doing other things. I ran memtest and let it run 4 cycles and it found no errors so i've moved on to Prime95. While running Prime95 the comp has crashed twice. Its running in the hybrid mode so its testing everything but it crashes at about 90 mins. No error messages or logs so im not really sure why it is. I'm assuming its either ram or cpu dying on me.

Any help would be much appreciated,
Lindsay

Re: Windows 7 Freezing

Brand & Model of the 550W PSU? You should be at 650W or above for a GTX 280.
Its A BFG Tech 550W. I bought it a year ago when my 1KW supply quit on me and it still hasn't returned from the warranty repair depot...... so I bought this one. I ran an online Power Supply Calculator and I'm running above what I need according to it. And it ran fine up until now.

So I just recalculated my my power supply using the Antec calculator and it looks like you were right as it was 675W. Is the psu I have in their right now just been pushed to hard and is failing to supply enough power when I push it ie starcraft or the prime95 tests?

if it is i'm thinking I will be picking up an 800W modular today
I've been running a 6600 quad and 2 8800gts with a corsair 550w psu for over 2 years and not a hiccup. Sometimes my CPU load is at a constant 90% and it still runs fine. I don't think a 280gtx draws that much more power than 2 8800 or does it?

Your Corsair is much better quality than a BFG.
The OP is using a GTX 280 so a larger PSU is required.

Yea, corsair is a very reliable brand. I'm not too familiar with bfg though. The graphics card these days are power hogs. Wonder how much power the 490 series suck up.
Re: Windows 7 Freezing

Alright I will roll down to my local store and I will pick up an 850W PSU. I never intended on using the BFG one for more than a month or two but at the time I was working at Futureshop and got it for $30 so I figured it would be alright for short term but 1 year later my old 1KW still hasnt returned from Antec repair......

Thanks for the help

And you didnt call and cuss them out why?
Re: Windows 7 Freezing

I have called them 5 times and they say they will look into it and they will call back. They never call back so I call and they say they have no record of anyone looking into it.

Bought a Cooler Master Silent Pro Gold 800W and threw in 4 more gigs of ram and shes working like a champ now.

Thanks guys.
