So after using Win7 for the past week or two I've finally figured out it was crashing my router. The worst part is the situation under which the router fails. Basically anytime I'm downloading a file whether it be through my browser, or games over Steam and the vast majority, if not all of my bandwidth is utilized, within a few minutes the router stops responding and must be physically reset. Windows 7 reports the issue as the DNS server not responding.

This is not an issue with the router, as no one else in my household is having, or has had this kind of issue before and I certainly didn't when I was running XP.

I have used SpeedGuide.net's "TCP Optimizer" though I probably shouldn't have as they said you shouldn't really on Vista or 7 and I've also used their SG TCP/IP Patch which is geared towards Vista and 7.

Thats your issue. More than likely your router is not coping with the optimised traffic.

Re: Windows 7 Causing Router To Fail

Well that's just it, I've run TCP Optimizer on XP (which it was built for really) and I never have had that issue. I can have my brother on on the PS3, dad on his laptop and someone else on our other desktop in the house and the router is fine. My lone computer isn't crashing the router just because the traffic is "optimized"

If the dns is the issue, You can use a different dns and try it. If you would like to do that, I will give you the information on your next post.

Ok. As you said though, it is built for XP rather than Vista/7 - there is a lot of difference between those Operating Systems.

Uninstall it from your 7 computer and see what happens.

Re: Windows 7 Causing Router To Fail

Towards dwm260 I'm running OpenDNS and to reventon, yeah, there's a good reason they said not to run it on Vista/7. I reverted all the settings it made to default and so far my connection is still live. I'll run a few more tests but right now I'm running a program that practically as soon as it started would crash the router and It's been up for a little while now and I can still browse the web.

Re: Windows 7 Causing Router To Fail

I am curious - how much of a speed gain on XP did it acheive anyway?

To me it seems like it would not have made much difference compared to other factors such as actual line speed.

Re: Windows 7 Causing Router To Fail

Considering I'm on a 20Mbit connection, it made quite a difference. I didn't get all my speed until I ran the TCP Optimizer.
