Hello everyone: I re-installed Win XP Pro into the same pc. All was well until

I.E.8 tried unsuccessfully to download. I.E. 7 came down instead. After

rebooting, the curor is an hourglass and nothing will work. I have to do a

hard shutdown every time! This will kill my NFTS system or fowl up my

HDD. If I boot into Safe Mode what can I "Run"; a log or something,

perhaps? Can someone help? BTW, Ubuntu 10.04 is dual booting, but there

are no issues with that system. Thank you all! - gustav521

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Hello mcorton: thank you for the quick reply! I tried the repair option according to that tutorial. It did nothing! I think there is a process like maybe WinKill which I have never had on my machines, but dl'd to try it out. In Safe Mode, how can I check to see if a process is not fitting in?? And how do I kill it?? Thank you. - gustav521

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Hello mcorton: At Starup I am now getting this: "Windows XP Setup cannot

run under Safemode. Setup will restart now." > OK. After I hit OK, the op

sys. just tries to restart over and over, but never loads! So now I don't even

get any screens!

Thank you again. - gustav521

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Hello mcorton: seems I am in an endless loop! Did Bios, did Repair, and it is still trying to boot, even with CD in place after changing Boot order. But it will boot into Ubuntu 10.04 without problems. I guess I might as well do a clean-install tomorrow. Why is it soo hard to get out of a "freeze" in XP??

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

I have done run > CHKDSK /R, but where is there a report? I have clean installed Win XP Pro. SP-2 & SP3, are loading up. I remembered reading a few yrs back, that Windows does not like being dual booted with Linux. So I will have one or the other in place soon, if I have a repeat of the problem. WinKill is installed before any Updates & SPs, and there are no freezes yet. Let's see when I.E. 8 tries to install! Why no REISUB/REISUO process as Ubuntu uses?? Thank you. - gustav521

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Here we are again! I.E.8 installed ok, then installed Avast, followed by ZoneAlarms FW free version. Restarted the sys, and Zone wanted to complete the install, BUT now the sys is frozen!! I see only the Desktop wallpaper, but no Trash icon, or the Taskbar. Oh, I see the Zone Security warning dialog box too. Any ideas? Thank you - gustav521

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Try uninstalling Avast and replacing it with. http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/, and uninstall Zone Alarm and until we get this figured out please use Windows Firewall. If you have internet access, download Download Revo Uninstaller Freeware - Free and Full Download - Uninstall software, remove programs, solve uninstall problems. and us the advanced mode to uninstall the above. Then click next and it'll search your HDD and registry and remove all traces windows uninstaller leaves behind.

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL and start the Task Manager. Go to File/NewTask(Run) and type explorer.exe and press enter. You should now have your desktop. Uninstall Zone Alarm in Add Remove programs and see if that helps.

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Hello "mcorton" & "spunk.funk"(thanks for joining in!): thank you for your help. The problem is resolved. I can now boot normally, but Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid" is no longer an option for dual booting! It has disappeared! As I remember, the XP Bootloader has taken over Grub2. That should be my only problem, lol! How can I now combine the Primary partition, where XP resides, with an Extended partition that had Lucid on it?? I formatted it so it shows up as "unallocated" too. To attempt these changes I am using live Gparted cd. Thank you both again! - gustav521 P.S.: I have questions re Ubuntu Lucid. Can you help with those, or do I post under the Linux topic area??

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Hello "mcorton": thanks for your reply. I will go over to the Linux area and ask there. I was just reading an article on Grub2 recovery after Win install, I might give it a go!! I wrestled with Grub legacy a few yrs ago, so here I go again! - gustav521

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Well my XP and Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid dual boot system has collapsed! XP

tries to boot but goes into endless re-starts after new files were copied

from the XP cd to the system, as a repair option. Gparted now shows that

there is only 1 Primary partition, and using the Lucid Live CD, I see that

the Win XP system and Lucid are both on that partition. The separate XP Primary is not there! It now shows as unallocated space.

Question: Should I create a Primary partition out of that unallocated

space to put XP back into(or is it just in the unallocated space?)? And do I

have to create a new MBR? Thank you!. - gustav521

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Lucid is a Live CD and you and it shouldn't have installed . Since you just reinstalled at the beginning of this thread. I would Boot off of the XP CD and Delete the partition and then create a new partition. If you want Linux, create a second partition. Then install XP on the First partition. Then after getting XP nice and updated, then install Linux. The Grub boot loader will take over so you can dual boot.

Re: Win XP frozen at startup after full restore install.

Hello "spunk.funk" & others; As I had not heard any advise, I went ahead

and re-installed all of XP, so that the entire HDD is XP now. I ran chkdsk C:

/r and XP said the HDD was "clean". I now have Virtualbox installed. Will run

Ubuntu 10.04 in it as "guest". Thank you for your input. - gustav521
