256mb Ram
80 GB HDD
Windows XP

I have been given an old PC and installed in the kids bed room

I didn't realise there was no sound driver with it so I have no sound. With out bringing it back downstair and connecting it to the net what can I do to identify the sound card and find the right driver?

note: Its only on an onboard soundcard!

Please help

Is it just a generic PC, or does it have a brand name and model number on it?

If it's unbranded, we could find out the make and model of the motherboard with a software utility (or, foregoing that, visual inspection of the board itself).

With that info, a google search will probably turn up some results.

if you mean its built-in you should search for your MotherBoard driver that Include all the Built-in Stuff like the USB and sound card if they are Built-in(you may find built in stuff alone),I think when you bought the motherboard you should have a driver CD(it will contain the Sound Card Driver), you can get me your MotherBoard info and I will find to you the driver
if you donnt mean its built in and its fixed in PCI slot, then all you have to do is to search for anything written on it that refer to its manufacture then you can find its driver.
if I understand your question wrong you can explain more about your problem

Its onboard sound - it is not an additional PCI card.

There is nothing giving a brand name of the PC - I don't mind pulling it open and having a look - but i'd prefer to run a utility to identify the MOBO.

Can you recommend one?
