As we all know there are different brands of the above card. However cant seem to find a simple test comparing these. Would like to hear your opinion in short about various makes (XFX, Saphire, etc.). Stereotypes are welcome :D

Personally I'd go with Saphire, just because I've been loyal to this brand for quite a while now.

My desired new build would be based on:
- 650 W PSU
- Asus M5A97 PRO 970 Socket AM3+
- AMD FX-4 4100 Black Edition 4 Core 3.6Ghz

Re: Which ATI 6870

Sapphire is my first choice for ATI/AMD chipped GPU's. I have also use MSI-HIS-PowerColor without issues.

The suggestions above are good. I have to admit that I am quite biased myself towards Sapphire as well. Very good cards but i wouldn't hesitate to try any one of Tyree's suggestions either.

A 6870 would be a good compliment for the build you listed.

Re: Which ATI 6870

If you don't mind paying a little extra I would go with XFX. They are good quality cards and are easier to sell (if you plan on future upgrades) due to their life time transferable warranty(once only). I myself have 1 Gigabyte card and 1 Radeon card.Love Gigabyte's cooling solution. My Gigabyte card is on top and runs cooler than the Radeon. Both overclock well. Even though Diamond Makes Radeon cards I would not suggest them as I have owned Diamond cards and they scammed people with some 4850's. They sold their diamond vipers like they were some hot item. Hot being the operative word, idled at 80c. Turns out they were crappy Radeon cards with a terrible cooling solution(had to keep the fan at 70% to get it to idle 50c).
In short it's personal preference and I would suggest you read customer comments when deciding. Look at different sites and see what customers have to say and what there experiences are.

Re: Which ATI 6870

I must say I did take the XFX into consideration. It's 20,- pounds less however I need to know whether there are any significant differences between this one and Saphire. Somehow I still wish to remain loyal to Saphire.

My current Saphire Rad 9600 XT has been running for almost 6 years now and I haven't been taking good care of it (loads of dust, etc.) :p

I have owned a 4770 in the past from XFX. Despite the fact it shipped with a bios that made the fan act funny their support was very quick to remedy the situation by sending me a new bios via email the very next day after describing the issue to them.

After that the card was wonderful to me and is still being used 2 years later with no issues. Fan was a little loud but most reference cards are.

Re: Which ATI 6870

ok, last one - what can I expect in terms of software delivered with the card. Heard good stuff about Trixx (Saphire). I suppose these can be used with other brands anyways?

Added software on the Drivers disc can very. I download and use the latest drivers so I very rarely ever look at the included disc.

Re: Which ATI 6870

If your going to use any software I would use ATI's Catalyst Control Centre no mater what brand of card you use. With ATI's new CCC v12:01 you will have control of not just overclocking and graphics settings, but you will be able modify and create application profiles of your own which is great if you like to play older games.

Re: Which ATI 6870

Im the same way. I prefer to use the driver only. CCC just has too many bugs.
Interesting considering I've never experienced problems with CCC. Since I have crossfire I don't have a choice but to use it and I will admit when I ran a single card I didn't use it either. But since ATI removed the application profiles from the driver back in 2010 without CCC you can't take advantage of the profiles. Before anybody says app profiles are not for a single card application or are in the driver, email AMD support and ask them first as I already have had to settle this dispute with someone else. Made a 100 bucks off that bet.

Re: Which ATI 6870

One other advantage I forgot to mention. With CCC you can take advantage of something called parallel processing. What this does is enable your system to use your GPU instead of your CPU for anything video related.
