AVG says I have 4 infected files, but when I checked them out, they are Dell drivers they say are signed with broken digital signatures: R177997, R223419, R139937 and R204990. Do I need to download new drivers for these or what?

Hello funnierthanme,

AVG sometimes gives 'false positives', and, in my opinion, this is one of those times.
I use AVG Internet Security™, and have done so for about 7 years; in that time I have found it to be very reliable, apart from about two or three occassions when they 'flagged' a 'false positive', including one of their own Drivers.

Having said that, to be certain that these Drivers are not infected, I suggest that you download a couple of them again (save them to a different place on your computer), and test them with thew AVG Shell Extension Test; that is, scan them indivually.

AVG has flagged them because of the digital signatures must be expired, or something.

Try it out and post back with the results.

Re: What is AVG telling me?

Hi, Dave,
I downloaded new drivers and scanned each of them individually, like you suggested. No infections were found. So, I ran a whole comoputer scan afterwards to show myself that it was all good, and AVG still said I have four infections and names the same drivers as before. How do I get rid of that message from AVG? Thanks. Jan

Hello Jan,

These false positives, were they on the Drivers that you already had installed, or were they the new ones?

I am intrigued to read your reply. :ermm:

Re: What is AVG telling me?

The message must be on the drivers that were already installed. When I ran the scan individually on the ones I downloaded, each one came up clean. I don't see two of each driver installed on my computer, though.

G'Day Jan,

Try re-installing the 'new' Drivers you downloaded; when you get the prompt that the file already exists, just go 'replace all'.
Once done, run AVG and post back with the result.

Re: What is AVG telling me?

Hello Again Jan,

This is very interesting indeed.
I personally would call it a "False Positive".
You could send AVG Technical Support an email detailing what has occurred, and see what they say; mention that they are trusted Drivers from Dell®, the manufacturers of your computer.
Give them the numbers of the 4 Drivers, so that they can download them for themselves, and do their own tests.

Letus know what happens.

Re: What is AVG telling me?

I went to the Tech Buddy chat to see if they would help and thought I got a "real" tech buddy but after being in the chat for a few minutes found out that he was only some type of manager and couldn't help. He only wanted to ask questions. At the end of my chat he said AVG Tech Buddy would cost me $99.99 because it was on sale right now or I could buy a year of it for $199.99. If not, he would refer me to "CrossLoop.com/avg" a place where freelance technicians get together with clients and work out a price they both agree on and then the technician can do that mouse control thing and fix your computer for you.

On 1-30-13, AVG told me it had found a Trogan in a game I had and recommended that I let AVG handle it for me. I took the recommendation and AVG even deleted the game from my computer. I'm serious. I checked my control panel. The game has vanished!

My computer has done nothing funny or quirky (the word the AVG Tech Buddy manager person used), but he said I needed someone with "special" tools to handle the issue I am having and AVG technicians do not have this equipment.

What good is AVG if they cannot fix this? I thought I had AVG to keep Trogans out of my computer. Tell me if there is a better protection out there. My subscription expires in May and I'll find someone else that can do better. With Windows Defender and AVG I still got a virus?

Re: What is AVG telling me?

See what a full scan with the free version of MBAM Malwarebytes : Malwarebytes Anti-Malware removes malware including viruses, spyware, worms and trojans, plus it protects your computer comes up with.

I would normally suggest ESET's free online scan to fully check out files Free Online Virus Scanner | ESET but that takes about 2½hrs on my lightly loaded laptops, whereas MBAM will be quicker and should suffice for a comparrison.

But it if you've downloaded and saved the new drivers, then uninstall the existing ones first before you install the new ones and then run AVG again.

Re: What is AVG telling me?

MBAM says my computer is clean.

I have bought an anti-virus plan from Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security and it also ran a scan after installation and came up with no infections. Before it could install, it had to uninstall AVG and I had no qualms about it. This program even erases my deleted files I put in the recycle bin if I ask it to.

I filled out the survey AVG sent asking about my satisfaction with the technician. I hope they weren't happy with him. I sure wasn't. This was all a non-issue in the first place. If he could have convinced me to wait for a real technician, I would have kept my AVG. TSK. TSK. TSK.

That's the problem with what turn out to be false positives - it may not have been on something that you knew to be safe, as it seems as if Trojans can be attached to almost anything, so anything iffy that is reported - then you have to check it out or expect those who are supposed to be in the know, to be able to give you an answer.

Re: What is AVG telling me?

He really scared me because I use my computer to shop and pay bills, etc.

I feel comfortable with the anti virus plan I have now, though, and with running the scans several times from others that have all come up clean.

I've had no experience with a false positive before so now I will know to check it out with other scans before I get so excited again.

Hi again Jan,

To be quite frank and honest; even though I have been using AVG™ for 7 years or so, (as I mentioned earlier in this Thread), it seems that their attitude has changed recently like many other software companies.
Meaning they are more interested in profits and money than their clients, and any issues, which is a great shame.

I must admit that when they released AVG Internet Security™ 2013, I was not very impressed, for a couple of reasons; firstly, it was causing me great angst because I was having severe overheating issues, with this computer; and, secondly, I did not (and still don't) like the appearance of the User Interface, to the extent that I contacted them and asked if I could revert back to their 2012 edition.
I received a rather curt reply, that caused me to see red - An abrupt NO!
I honestly do not know why they changed the look of the program when the 'old' version was working so well...just look at my signature.

The upshot was that I uninstalled AVG™ and installed Microsoft's Security Essentials. (Distributed by Microsoft® for FREE too!)
(There are still another four computers with AVG installed under the current licence I have with them.)

I also had contacted HP™ about the overheating issue, because this computer is still under Factory Warranty, and they gave me the suggestion about AVG™ being a possible culprit...they were spot on!
My overheating issue was rectified almost immediately (my temps dropped from 63°C down to 41°C).

AVG™ do have a Removal Tool, because its tentacles are spread widely, and not all bits are removed by the Windows Uninstaller.
AVG™ Removal Tools are available from
this site.

As you aptly said about AVG, "TSK.TSK.TSK".
Enjoy using Trend Micro™.
Perhaps AVG might wake up to themselves one day. :4-dontkno

Kind Regards,
