I just purchased a WD 640Gig HDD from NewEgg.com Great huh? Well here's the thing. I tried to plug it in and that's where it all began.

Motherboard: A8V Deluxe. BIOS updated.
1 Gig RAM
No other hardware interfears with this issue.

I tried plugging the HDD into SATA RAID 1 and 2. No response. Ok it was worth a shot. I plugged it into SATA 1 and then 2. Got something. When it boots up it says that it's detected under Serial_Ch0 as the BIOS detects things. Then that's as far as it goes. I tried putting in a OS CD, Win XP never detects it as a drive to create a partition on. So then I put it in another computer which usues SATA primarily. It detected it as 131Gig HDD. Well ok worth a shot to get someone. I made the partition of 131 and formated it to prep for Windows. I then just took it out to see if I could do it on my own computer. Once I put it in it booted up and detected as a normal HD giving me the No NTDR error, which I understood and seemed fine. Once I put the XP disk in, it gets to the screen where I choose a disk drive to work with. Then when hitting any key, it gives me a blue screen stating that it's trying to save my computer from further harm and need to reboot. That's where I stand, no idea what else to do. :4-dontkno I want to whole 640gigs. Im ready to send it back honestly. Unless anyone has any ideas on what I can do from here. I just need to get the XP disk to read it, then Im good to go.

*Note BIOS has never recongized the device throughout the entire time trying, except on the other computer. I also fiddled with the BIOS, no luck on that either.

Re: WD HDD acting funny

if you are using with vista it should recognise it
with xp set as ide in the bios and if you are plugging into a raid capable port load the raid driver with f6

In bios turn Raid off, if there is a option. You want bios to treat the
drive as a ide drive even though its a sata drive. By default bios
will select raid, most boards Ive dealt with anyway.
Once recognized, and xp installed, you need to install sp2, then
you can use the whole drive. There is a hdd size limitation of 137 gigs
for xp, but once sp2 is installed you can allocate the remaining hdd
space. Sometimes its automatic, or sometimes you have to go into
disc management and allocate in separate partitions.

Re: WD HDD acting funny

The only issue is that I cant get the computer to ID the drive as IDE even though it's SATA. Or ID the drive at all so I could do something with it. Im now going to attempt to load it with Vista to see if I can get any results.

Any idea, if I set it up with Vista, that I can put it on. Then take Vista off to put XP on it then it would work just fine?

Re: WD HDD acting funny

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but...

The problem you are experiencing is with 48bit Logical Block Addressing through the controller / controller BIOS. 48bit LBA allows you run drives larger than 137GB. If the controller / BIOS doesn't support 48bit LBA then you won't be able to run it, no matter which operating system you use or trying to install the OS on one computer and moving the drive to the sytem you want to run it on.

Both the Promise SATA and the VIA SATA / IDE controllers have this issue. The only work around is to purchase a 3rd party add-in card which does support 48bit LBA.

Re: WD HDD acting funny

Such as the PCI cards that support SATA? I've tried a lot to get this working. So I've now accepted that it will have to be a secondary drive. I installed SP2 as mentioned before. Next step is to make a new partition to maximize the 640 rather than the 127 Windows says it has. =s I hope to do this with Partition magic, I saw it mentioned in another thread. Thank you Ace, I suppose it's another reason to buy a new motherboard.

Update: Partition Magic did the trick. I got 596 Gigs out of the 640. Wish I could snag a bit more though. Feel kinda cheated out. So I suppose, Mission accomplished? Might eventually put it in an external.

You may experience a problem using Partition Magic in that capacity. Before you start putting anything important on the drive, load it up with 137GB worth of files. If you find that you start experiencing data loss then Partition Magic is not overcoming the issue.
