Hi!
So, recently, a bunch of my files from my USB just disappeared. I tried numerous amounts of USB Recovery software, but that doesn't work.

I don't think the files are actually deleted - when I right click all the folders and files and look at the properties, it says it only takes up 2.2GB. However, when I go to My Computer and check the properties of the flash drive, it says that 4.7GB is used up. And, no, the folders are not hidden.

Perhaps the "file table" got messed up? If something of the sort happened, how can I fix it?

Thank you in advance.

Re: USB Missing Files

Hi Mraznnoob,

It's possible the files may have got accidentally hidden. Do you know any sub-folder names on your USB? If so, try browse to it manually by typing in the address bar of your explorer window.

If that doesn't work, make sure the disk doesn't have any errors or faults. Run a "chkdsk" command in the command prompt.

EDIT: Also try restore windows explorer settings to default and see if that helps.

Re: USB Missing Files

I just noticed you mentioned they weren't hidden in the original post, sorry about that. Don't know how i missed that.

Well considering the file system is corrupt and windows can't fix it, and the fact that you've already tried third party applications... your best to wait for a more experienced tech to assist with the data recovery.

I know you say the files aren't hidden, But Just for laughs run Unhide.exe on the flash drive to make all files visible. Also, Move the 2.2 GB of files that are visible, off of the drive, so it will look totally blank. That will free up enough space to allow Check Disk to run and fix the other files.

Re: USB Missing Files

Just tried - but disc checking still comes up with the insufficient space error. Also, some folders got left behind because a file was missing or the filename was too long.

One of the file was named ─▀, if that looks familiar.

Unhide didn't work either.

Re: USB Missing Files

That is a corrupt file. I would assume, even if you could recover the other files, the rest of the files would be corrupt as well.
To gain the Full Size of the drive back, if the whole drive isn't corrupt, go to Start/Run and type diskmgmt.msc and press enter. In the Disk Management window Right click the partition/volume of the drive and Delete Volume, or go up to the Tool bar and press the X. This will delete the partition, now right click the Unallocated Space, and Create a New Simple Volume. Format it FAT32. If this still fails, then the drive needs to be replaced.

Re: USB Missing Files

So, I'm guessing, all the other files are completely unrecoverable and I can't do anything in this matter?

When I right click it, Delete Volume is unclickable.
