Hi, Ive recently thought it about time i upgraded my OS to windows 7. I am currently using windows xp home edition sp2 ( 32 bit) and have a copy of windows 7 64bit professional (the upgrade edition)
I have checked that my system is capable of supporting 64bit and it is (i think)

ASrock K10N78D mobo
AMD Phenom 9950+ 2.6 ghz x4
8gb ddr2 RAM
Nvidia bfg gts 250 1gb
700w corsair psu

So i insert my windows 7 disc and select boot from CD, the computer spends afew seconds 'loading windows' once this has finished the windows logo appears, the computer then freezes and im presented with:

Stop: unkown hard error systemroot\system 32\ntdll.dll

I have been reading into the causes of this error abit and have found it is caused by a damaged ntdll.dll file, my question is, is this likely to be the file on the windows 7 disc or the installed file of my windows xp?

I have ran a full virus scan of the system.

Any help that could be provied would be vrey gratefully recieved, many thanks, Mike

True, but without the driver support it's not going to be any good and will not work correctly and you will have problems. Sometimes you can use Vista drivers and get away with it, but Vista aren't even supported for the model of your computer.

[Edit] Sorry, ignore my last post. Your motherboard does support Windows 7. I had my threads crossed.

You cannot use an upgrade version of Win7 and install on a XP system. You must do a full installation which would require reformatting the hdd.

This does not apply to you but you wouldn't be able to upgrade from a vista 32-bit system to a win7 64-bit system either.

Read here
To upgrade your PC from Windows XP to Windows 7, you'll need to select the Custom option during Windows 7 installation. A custom installation doesn't preserve your programs, files, or settings. It's sometimes called a "clean" installation for that reason.

since you are using an upgrade disk, you must insert the disk while the computer it booted to xp and start the custom install from there. A custom install is really a full install - once it sees you have a legal activated copy of xp, it will wipe the drive and install from scratch. Just follow the instructions on the screen.

Re: Upgrading xp to windows 7 STOP error during install.

When i boot from cd it does'nt even progress as far as to allow me to select a custom install. (unless i am missing something)

If this disc is inserted while the computer is running it will tell me the OS doesnt support the disc and i need to restart, boot from cd and select custom install. The plan all along was to have it reformat my HDD so i have all my important files backed up etc, would reinstalling xp help?

Thanks for the help!

tell about your win7 disk. Is it a burned copy of win7 that you downloaded. If downloaded where did you download it from? Is it a retail disk or retail oem? or did it come from another computer?

Re: Upgrading xp to windows 7 STOP error during install.

Although you can actually make a purchase to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7, it won't upgrade it as much as it will notice your XP instillation, and then do a clean install of Windows 7. In other words, you need to have Windows XP to make your purchase valid, but it will only wipe everything and give you a fresh new Windows 7.

For this reason, you should take a copy of everything on your computer onto something else first that you want to keep. Also keep a list of the programs you need to install again as well, but also note that if they are old enough they may not run. I would suggest keeping a text list of your installed programs, and then later on download an updated copy off the internet to install. The thing you will miss out on though is any custom settings you may have, like how a browser works exactly how you want it to.

I brought my windows 7 disc from Microsoft Office Student Offer 2010 Home Software Download UK | Software4Students.co.uk
Its the 64bit professional upgrade edition. My copy of windows xp came with my pc when i brought it (from Comet i think) several years ago. The fact that i get the STOP error while it is 'starting windows' makes me think its a problem with the disc or my disc drive, but im really not an expert

At some point you may need to give Microsoft a call, or the retailer that sold it to you for support. It isn't like you will be able to wipe everything, and do a clean install, because you need the old install to make upgrade possible even if this process wipes the old XP off the computer in the process.

If the problem is happening at the point you mentioned, this might be because of a hardware comparability problems. This is the stage where Windows detects the hardware, and if things stop working at this point then it's the hardware. I've faced this before with a RAID card, and had to slipstream the driver into the disk first.

Hi Treloarm,

Are you still able to use your XP installation? If so, can you download Service Pack 3 (Start>All Programs>Windows Update) plus all other available updates (non essential) as this may help with the ntdll.dll issue as it has a lot of fixes you are missing from your machine if you only have Service Pack 2. Then try the upgrade again.

Try burning another DVD, I've seen issues before with the student D/L's and burning the disk, also try using a different program to burn the disk Imgburn is a decent free program.

Re: Upgrading xp to windows 7 STOP error during install.

I think what wrench97 was saying was to use imgburn to create an ISO file from your Windows Disk and then burn that ISO file to another disk, but using a slow burn (no faster than x4) and make sure that the 'Verify' box is checked. It's a great way to backup your disks. I have done it for my Windows and driver disks as I am pretty bad at trying to find a disk when I need it most, or they just get damaged over time.

No I took for granted the student version in the UK was the same form as we had in the states which was a Download from Digital River(an MS agent), which you then had to burn to a DVD.

Have you used the DVD drive with a DVD lately, like a Movie DVD to make sure the drive is working properly?

You could also try creating a bootable USB and then using that. It's very simple to do using WinToFlash. I normally do my installs this way as it's actually quicker as well (at least for me), and if there are issues with your DVD Drive as wrench97 was asking, it would be a good work around and worth trying. You will need to change your boot order in BIOS to USB as first boot device in order to boot from the stick though. Main thing to remember when using this way is when set-up has completed on Windows 7 and it need to reboot the system for the first time, remove the USB otherwise it will automatically try to boot from it again (without prompting you), or just change the boot order quickly back to HDD as first device.
USB needs to be minimum of 4GB. WinToFlash will format it for you if required, so make sure you have nothing important on there.
