[SOLVED] Upgrading to Service Pack 2

1162 Views 14 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  azra
I have an old XP computer which has SP1 Installed. I've bought a new computer which is Vista. I've also purchased a "Belkin Easy Transfer Cable" which will let me transfer all my files from my old computer to my new one.

However to use the "Belkin Easy Transfer Cable" I need to have SP2 installed on my old computer. I have an installation CD to do that, but every time I try to install SP2, at the end of the installation "The installation could not be completed." It isn't a problem with a CD though because on my other laptop which was SP1, the CD let me successfully install SP2 on it.

Why is this and how can I install SP2 to my old computer successfully?

Does it tell you why it couldn't install successfully? Any error numbers?

I dont think so. I'll try installing it again and let you know exactly what the error message is. Any other ideas?

Re: Upgrading to Service Pack 2

I installed SP2 from the download link on microsoft.com

After it finished installing I got a message which said "Access is denied". After I pressed OK, I got another message which said "Service Pack 2 installation did not complete. Select 'OK' to undo the changes that have been made."

After I pressed OK, Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard popped up and started removing it.

What do I do?

Re: Upgrading to Service Pack 2

the best way to install it is to slipstream it into the xp disk with nlite
then run a repair install with the slipstreamed disk

Re: Upgrading to Service Pack 2

You could also try copying the files from the SP2 cd to the computer and see if it'll install that way; or use a fresh downloaded copy from Microsoft, if you can still get it. Or you can get it here:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/windows/winxpsp2-security.html

It's the full version though. 272 MB
