i get this error code while trying to update my xp sp3 pc through microsoft website [Error number: 0x80070420]

Hi Ramprasad,
Your problem is probably Windows Installer 3.1.
Click on "Start" > "Control Panel". Double-click on "Add/Remove Programs"
Search your Program List for "Windows Installer 3.1".
If you find it, click "Remove".

Reboot your computer.

Download Windows Installer 3.1 again from Microsoft page http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=889482fc-5f56-4a38-b838-de776fd4138c&displaylang=en

Install it and reboot again. Then it should work again.

Hello

You could try this too

Close any Windows Update or Microsoft Update browser windows.
Click Start , click Run,
type command prompt in the Open box, and then click OK.

At the command prompt, type the following commands.
Press ENTER after each command.

net stop wuauserv

net start wuauserv

exit

Try to install the updates again.
