On my XP SP3 computer I have partitioned the first physical hard drive into three partitions. C: contains the operative system, D: the swap file, and E: the Documents and Settings folders. These are my reasons:

I have convinced myself that the C:partition don't get so fragmented when the swap-file doesnt write all over it, and putting the sf as only file on the D:partition let it live its own life without interfering with any other files. I have been using this feature for several years and on several computers without problem.

When I had to re-install XP due to malfunctions I decided to use the unattended setup method, and used this command: "[GuiUnattended] ProfilesDir=E:\ ". Now my computer crashes frequently with the blue-screen-of-death. I get several different error messages, among them DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL, PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA, and STOP: 0x000000BE in fltmgr.sys.

Keeping the D&S files away from the C:partition seem to be a very good idea. If the system crashes all information is still kept on another drive without frequent backup.

Before I reinstall XP with the D&S files on the C:partition I wish to ask if anyone knows if it is common that a computer crashes if the D&S are not situated on the same partition as the OS? On the other hand, if that should be no problem, my problems must originate from the D&S I have reinstalled. How do I then solve my problems?

And I am using the latest Norton Internet Security and have done a full system scan.

Re: Unattended setup error?

I have done that two months ago, with no problems in Memtest.

Re: Unattended setup error?

During the last several months I have run chkdsk numerous times. Most of the times there seem not to have been any errors that couldn't be fixed, a few times there were errors that needed more attention.

Now I have again run chkdsk, and I have pasted the error log below. The same pattern of errors are present in all Winlogon logs I still have left on my newly installed computer:

"Checking file system on C:
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Volume label is XP.
A disk check has been scheduled.
Windows will now check the disk.
Cleaning up minor inconsistencies on the drive.
Cleaning up 42 unused index entries from index $SII of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 42 unused index entries from index $SDH of file 0x9.
Cleaning up 42 unused security descriptors.
CHKDSK is verifying Usn Journal...
Usn Journal verification completed."

I cannot interpret this fully, but it is present in any log from the C: and E: disks. Here are the full latest logs for C: and E:.

Re: Unattended setup error?

Ok, now I have read article 831374.

It says I shall download the latest service pack, but I already use SP3.

It also suggest the use of Vrfydsk.exe. When I did I got this result:
"Attempting to create shadow copy of \\?\Volume<a2fdfB6e-67ec-llde-8612-8B6d6172696f>\ .
Shadow copy creation failed on \\?\Volume<a2fdfB6e-67ec-llde-8612-8B6d6172696f)\.
Unexpected error. <Error 0xc0000005>
C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools>"

So, what do I do now?

Re: Unattended setup error?

HarvMan, thanks for your help.

I have now bought support from Microsoft, and their response is that I shall reinstall XP and leave the D&S folders on the C-partition. I thought I had a good idea, but it didn't work.

And again, thanks for your help. /Arne
