Hi, I am a newbie to all this so please be patient with me. I will try to give as much info as possible.

I have my computer (A) and my wifes (B) networked with a linksys Wrt...., I forget the rest of the name of the linksys. If you need it I will look it up. We both have xp. She can see mine but I can't see hers. I have tried pinging her ip and it didn't work. She can ping mine just fine. So I think mine is the problem. I have internet just fine. I need to know how to fix this if possible. It may be a simple setting in my windows that got changed because I could see hers at one time.

One more thing, I log in as Administrator on mine yet she sees me as Rob(RJ). I don't know if that means anything.

Oh another thing. I have an hp officejet plugged into the linksys and I can print to it just fine. :sigh:

Please help if you can. Thanks in advance.

Re: Unable to see other computer

Turn off any firewalls for debugging. If the firewall is the problem, you'll have to configure it to allow access to "trusted zone" addresses. Note that some firewalls must be completely uninstalled to stop them from affecting your networking.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt for the following commands.

PING each remote computer by IP address, and if successful, PING by name. Open a command prompt as described above and type.

PING <ip address>
or
PING <computer name>

Where:
<ip address> - is the x.x.x.x IP address
<computer name> - is the computer name

A failure to PING is almost always a firewall configuration issue. Any failure to PING needs to be corrected before you go any farther.

Note: You can obtain the IP address and computer name of a computer by opening a command prompt (DOS window) and typing IPCONFIG /ALL. This should work for any Windows version. The IPCONFIG /ALL display will provide a wealth of useful information for debugging your network connection.

Check your Services are Started on all PCs:
  • Computer Browser
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP Netbios helper
  • Workstation

Note: You can check the services in Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services.

All of these services should be started, and their startup type should be automatic.

All computers should be in the same workgroup for computer browsing to function properly. File & Print Sharing has to be enabled on any computer you wish to share files or printers from. You also need to actually share the resource in question from My Computer, right click on the drive/printer/folder, and select sharing.

If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login.

While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing.

Re: Unable to see other computer

Thanks for getting back so quick.

I forgot to tell you that I did turn off all firewalls.

There were a couple things that werent started on the services. I started them. I haven't rebooted. Should I?

I had a question regarding one of your comments: "While the default NetBIOS setting is correct for normal network configurations, it's possible for it to be altered, and it costs nothing to make sure it's correct. NETBIOS over TCP/IP must be enabled for normal network browsing." How do I get to this to verify it is correct?

At one point you mentioned....."If you encounter difficulties accessing computers that are visible in Network Neighborhood, make sure the computer being accessed has an account with the same name/password as the system connecting to it uses to login".........I cannot see any of the other computers. Matter of fact when I try looking st the computers in my neighborhood it gives me a message that I don't have permission etc etc.

Any other ideas?

Re: Unable to see other computer

Enable NETBIOS over TCP/IP for 2K/XP

  1. Right click Network Neighborhood
  2. Select Properties
  3. Right click your Internet Connection (ex. Local Area Connection)
  4. Select Properties
  5. Make sure Client for Microsoft Networks, and File and Print Sharing for Microsoft Networks are SELECTED.
    • Highlight Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    • Click Properties
    • Click Advanced
    • Select the WINS Tab Above
    • Make sure Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP is SELECTED
  6. Click OK and Close Network Connections Window.

Re: Unable to see other computer

I'd like to see this for each of the computers.

Start, Run, CMD to open a command prompt:

Type the following two commands:

nbtstat -n

ipconfig /all

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If you are on a machine with no network connection, use a floppy, USB disk, or a CD-RW disk to transfer a text file with the information to allow pasting it here.

Re: Unable to see other computer

The command is nbtstat -n, note the space before the dash.

One fix for slow browsing is to stop browsing Scheduled Tasks

Open up the Registry Editor by clicking the Start Menu and selecting Run.
Type regedit in the text box and click the OK button.

Once the Registry Editor has loaded, expand the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE key.
Next, expand Software and then Microsoft.

Locate Windows and expand that as well.

You will want to be editing the main system files, so expand CurrentVersion.

Because this feature is a feature of the Windows component known as Explorer, expand the Explorer key.

Next, you will want to modify the remote computer settings, so expand the RemoteComputer key and then expand the NameSpace key to show all of the features that are enabled when you browse to a remote computer.

In the NameSpace folder you will find two entries. One is "{2227A280-3AEA-1069-A2DE-08002B30309D}" which tells Explorer to show printers shared on the remote machine. The other, "{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}," tells Explorer to show remote scheduled tasks. This is the one that you should delete.

Close REGEDIT and reboot.

Re: Unable to see other computer

John, you sure have been helpful. I thank you so much. I was a little scared to play around with the registry but I exported a copy prior to following your instructions. It seems to be working faster now. Thanks again
