Please help me. My son was on my mother's computer looking up video games and infested her computer with some nasty stuff. We had someone come in and clean up a lot of issues, but the occassional pop-up remained. The occassional pop-up is now back to a pop up every couple of key strokes while online and we have a yellow triangle with an ! that pops up letting us know that the microsoft needs to be updated. I followed the "first steps" and the microsoft service pack 3 failed. Her system is Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, Dell Dimension DIM4600, Pentium 4 CPU 2.80GHz, 2.79 GHz, 512MB of Ram.

Also, I am using Logmein to work on her computer which you will see. If anyone can help I would be eternally greatful!

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

Welcome to TSF.

Go to Start->Run and type in regedit and hit OK. Go to File->Export and save the registry somewhere as a backup. Close the Registry Editor now. Go to Start->Run and type in notepad and hit OK. Then copy and paste the following into Notepad:

REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\system\currentcontrolset\control\lsa]
"Authentication Packages"=hex(7):6d,73,76,31,5f,30,00,00

Save the file as "delete.reg". Make sure to save it with the quotes. Close Notepad. Double click on the delete.reg file and choose Yes to merge/add it to the registry. You may delete the file afterwards.

Download OTMoveIt2 at http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTMoveIt2.exe
* Save it to your desktop.
* Double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it. (Vista users, right click on OTMoveIt2.exe and select Run as an Administrator).
* Copy the file paths below to the clipboard by highlighting ALL of them and pressing CTRL + C (or, after highlighting, right-click and choose Copy):

Code:
C:\Documents and Settings\Tracy Family\Application Data\lmobf.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dghhk.ini2
C:\BAK325.reg
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ssyjicxq.dll
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\software\microsoft\shared tools\msconfig\startupreg\BM536f2c6f
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\\Microsoft Windows Adapter 5.1.3214
* Return to OTMoveIt2. Right click in the Paste List of Files/Folders to Move window (under the Yellow bar) and choose Paste.
* Click the red Moveit! button.
* A log of files and folders moved will be created in the C:\_OTMoveIt\MovedFiles folder in the form of Date and Time (mmddyyyy_hhmmss.log). Please open this log in Notepad and post its contents in your next reply.
* Close OTMoveIt2.

If a file or folder cannot be moved immediately you may be asked to reboot the machine to finish the move process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Go to http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix and follow the instructions on how to install the Recovery Console and run ComboFix. Go through all the steps until posting the log part. Post the combofix log here.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

I was able to do all above steps and ran combofix, see below log. I did receive a message ragarding the recovery console not being installed, all though I did it step by step above. I am also still receiving pop-ups at this time. Many thanks, sorry it took so long. I was having trouble running combofix through logmein; it kept disconnecting.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

If someone in front of the computer can follow the instructions, it would be best. Otherwise, you might run into more disconnect issues.

Try to delete the following file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk

If it's giving you problems, try to delete it from Safe Mode.

Open up your Notepad editor (Start->Run, type in notepad and click OK). Copy the text from the quotebox below into Notepad:
Driver::
MEMSWEEP2
File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\core.cache.dsk
Folder::
C:\temp\tn3
Save this as CFScript.txt in the same location as the ComboFix.exe tool.
Drag the CFScript.txt into ComboFix.exe
Follow the prompts. When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply.

Note: Do not click on combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

We were able to remove Core.cache.dsk in Safe mode and then followed the rest of the directions. Thanks!

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

Download Malwarebytes ' Anti-Malware at http://www.besttechie.net/tools/mbam-setup.exe or http://www.majorgeeks.com/Malwarebytes_Anti-Malware_d5756.html Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.

* Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
* If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
* Once the program has loaded, select Perform Full Scan, then click Scan.
* The scan may take some time to finish, so please be patient.
* When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
* Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
* When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to restart (see Extra Note below).
* The log is automatically saved by MBAM and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
* Copy & paste the entire report into your next reply.

Extra Note:
If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts. Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

Try deleting these two in Safe Mode if it gives you problems removing them from Normal Mode:

C:\temp\tn3
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\core.cache.dsk

Run a new Combofix scan in Normal Mode and post the log here.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

Please follow my previous instructions on how to run CFScript.txt again. I want you to create that notepad file and drag/drop it into Combofix. Do NOT double-click on Combofix for this particular fix.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

Ok, I did it again. I created CFScript.txt on my desktop. I then dragged and dropped into the combofix.exe also on the desktop. I did not run it at this time.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

Combofix didn't run automatically? Download Combofix again but rename it first to CFmustangdebbie.exe before saving it to your desktop. Try dragging and dropping the CFScript into that file now.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

Ok I downloaded Combo fix again and named it as above. I dragged and dropped CFScript into it and then had a prompt to run. I ran combofix and this is it's log. At this point I would also like to say that all signs of pop-ups are gone from the computer.

Re: Trojans, Pop ups and System update failed

Good job. Your log is clean.

To help prevent future spyware infections, read the Anti-Spyware Tutorial and use the tools provided.

Are there any problems now? If none, go to Start->Run, copy/paste in combofix /u and hit OK to remove it. You should be set to go.
