Ok i posted here a few days ago about how the speakers wernt working properly on my new laptop, i got my friend to have a look at it, he found 38 lost mov files on here that were modified on 31st march and before, i only bought the comp at the begining of this month!!! i bought it from tescos, how the hell could they con me???

I forgot to say, i rang the electrical people up for my warranty and they said they would fix it but if it was a software problem it would cost me £70

Hi take it back to tesco and tell them it is not working they may just take it and give you a new one, tesco usually have a years warranty if you kept the receipt it may be prudent to say little other than it is not working.mov files relate to apple quick time that may have come preloaded and that could have been that far back

Thanks Joeten. I just find it hard to believe a brand new notebook would have sound issues, its got worse now and the speakers are crackling through the headphones which is the only sound i can get cause the notebook assumes the headphones are plugged in all the time for some reason so i get no sound without them. Also the 38 mov files ranged from 930 mb to 1.87 gig, isnt that the size of movies? i might be wrong but this seems weird.

I forgot to say to it heats up really quickly and im using a laptop table? dont know weather this is normal or not for a notebook as ive never had one before? the fan kicks in and out alot.

Hi can you acces the files will they play, laptops can get hot you can try something like this to monitor http://www.techpowerup.com/realtemp/ or speed fan but that can be a little unreliable

53+ Gig's worth of .Mov's does seem excessive to me! What are the filenames like, numerical or..?
Re: The laptop i bought was meant to be brand new, is this proof it isnt?

Hi even for me that seems odd try bsplayer or mv2player you may be able to view them

Hi do you have the space back
Hi do you have the space back
Hi Joeten... how do you mean..the space back? I was going to use that as proof that it was second hand but now all the files are gone for some reason?
Is there any way i can check with the serial number if it is new or been used before? this notebook came from tescos too:rolleyes:

Ahhh theyve come back now :)

They just say LostFile_Mov_ and aload of numbers next to it, theres only 1 date on one of them and thats the 31st march 2010, is there any way i can recover them for free? thanks.

Hi again, i know what you mean now about the space back, just woke up, lol. There wasnt any space missing, they were just found in the lost files on a programme called recover my files. I just checked the space now and it says my drive is only 139 gig but on the box it says its 160 gig ?

A 160GB drive actually only has something like 149GB available. Has something to do with the way the space is calculated. Maybe there is also a hidden partition with all the files for system recovery to out-of-box state.
Hi,

Is this an Acer, an Asus or a.n.other brand? Not sure what Tesco's are selling these days..!

Please note that *most* new Laptop's now come with a recovery partition on the drive, the size of this partition can fluctuate from 12Gb downwards. I wouldn't worry about this and I certainly wouldn't be accessing it and deleting anything! You should be able to see this in 'My Computer', but again, don't worry if you can't, it may be hidden.

I would be taking some of these file names you have a copy/pasting them into Google to see what pop's-up. You'll see a trend developing if they relate to one particular program and possibly even a fix if this is how it comes out of the box.

Let us know either way.

Cheers.

Hi you might try recuva http://www.google.co.uk/url?q=http:...MoADAA&usg=AFQjCNHEjvqDT3JErNYbGXOywdLE4jtbTA and see what it can get

Thanks for the info on the drive :) i think im automatically looking for other faults now, i just want to make sure im right about these files before i take it back, its only found 18 of them this time, they are 1.59 gig 965.3 mb 1.79 gig 1.82 gig 1.75 gig 1.74 gig and 1.73 gig and they all say LostFile_Mov_ and 8 numbers by the side of this, ive googled them but nothing comes up. Ive tried the programme that joeten mentioned but it doesnt find the files on there,, i really want to know what they are now.
Re: The laptop i bought was meant to be brand new, is this proof it isnt?

Drop it back to them and just tell them that you have run out of space and you're not happy with it. See what they say. These files make no sense to me to be honest!
Re: The laptop i bought was meant to be brand new, is this proof it isnt?

What the recovery program is finding are file header signatures, a sequence of bytes that indicate the type of a file, usually in the first 20 bytes or so of the file and the header is usually 3 - 10 bytes long. False positives are pretty common in recoveries, particularly if the header for a file type is one of the shorter strings.. When the recovery software scans, it looks at all the disk space and random strings can match a header. Since when doing this raw recovery, the software has no way to identify it actually is a file, it shows the space following the header, until another header or a footer, if the file type has one - is encountered. I have done evaluations on disks that were wiped with a random pattern and identified 'files' one said it had almost 200 cannon raw images. There were really no files - false positives.
