[SOLVED] stupid stupid mistake, please HELP! i just need to rename two files!

So i made the mistake of following some online instructions (not from here) about how to get rid of a certain type of spyware. i renamed two files that are necessary to load windows and all i need to do is rename them back.

i'm running winxpsp2. i have a windows98 disc, a win2k disc, a winxppro disc and a UBCD, which i assume is my best bet, but have no idea how to use it. With the xppro disk, i tried to repair, but its insisting i put in an administrator password that was never created (just hitting enter doesn't work either). So without that password, i can't reach a c: prompt via the winxp disc.

All i need to do is get to a c: prompt. i know the names of the files i changed. i know what they should be. i know where they're located. i just can't access them because i can't get to a c: prompt. Oh and safemode doesn't work either.

i *really* don't want to have to eff up my computer by reinstalling windows just because i renamed two stupid files.
Please, can anyone help me get to a c: prompt?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Use UBCD, it will boot into winpe so you will be able to access c: drive.

This is if UBCD doesn't work.
Do you have another computer you can boot into, that has Windows 2000 or XP, that you can plug the drive that won't boot into? Just plug it into another IDE channel, boot, and rename.
(There's other things to consider, like how big is the drive that won't boot - is it over 128GB?, is it SATA and does the other computer have SATA, and what OS and service pack do you have on the computer you'd want to plug the drive into; so let us know before you try it so we can check it's feasible)

On a different computer go to the following site:

ftp://ftp.gtlib.cc.gatech.edu/nv/ao2/lxmirror/releases.ubuntu.com/8.04.1/

Download the following ISO and make a bootable disk from burning it:

ubuntu-8.04.1-desktop-i386.iso

Boot from this disk and then you will be able to access the hard drive C:\ and find and rename the two files.

Use UBCD, it will boot into winpe so you will be able to access c: drive.
winpe?
i have a lot of options on the UBCD and i don't know which to use: DOS programs, hard drive programs, network programs? Where on the cd do i find winpe? Sorry, i really need specific help.

As far as the other options, i may have a tower i can fiddle with, but it's been sitting around a while, so i don't know the specs yet. Or maybe i could try to figure out how to network them- but probably not without being able to log into windows (which would mean my problem is solved). i'll try the UBCD first if i can figure out how to use it. Since my only cd/dvd burner is in the pc that's messed up, i don't now how likely burning iso is.
Re: stupid stupid mistake, please HELP! i just need to rename two files!

In case anyone has the same problem, i solved my own by booting to a win2k disc and choosing the repair option. This took me to the same place the winxp disc did, only did not ask for an administrator password.

It just asked me which drive i'd like to access, i put in the number given for my main drive (c:) and it gave me a c:/windows prompt.

i renamed my files and am back up and working again.
Thanks to those who tried to help me!
